The Neva river is only 46 1/4 miles long, flowing from the Lake Ladoga to the Gulf of Finland, in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea.
On average the river is 1300-2000 feet wide, but near the Peter and Paul fortress and the Hermitage it exceeds 2600 feet.
The river is covered with ice between mid-December and the first quarter of April and during this period there's no navigation on the river.

Neva was the name of a 200-foot-long (61-meter), three-masted sloop-of-war, the first Russian ship to circumnavigate the globe in 1804 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Urey Fedorovich Lisianski.

The Neva River runs through the middle of the city, and as in many cities industry is clustered along the banks of the river, though thankfully at a distance from the cultural heart of the city.
The buildings consistently face the river, and pedestrians are drawn in both by the appealing facades with their Easter egg paint colors and by the sight of the Neva splashing along.
Even walking across the Neva we couldn't help noticing the constant smell of exhaust that permeates the city, particularly if the old diesel vehicles were idling in a traffic jam, waiting to get across the bridge.
