The Tranquil, shady waters attract geese, ducks and swans and are spanned by an Iron Bridge.

Twice in November the River Ock at Abingdon is on flood watch, from 13 to 17 November, and again from 23 to 26 November.
The River Ock's water level rose even higher than in 2000/2001, and flooding was very narrowly avoided in two areas of South Abingdon.
A developer's proposal to build an office block on land south of Marcham Road, close by the River Ock, was initially opposed by the Environment Agency until the risk assessment showed that the land in question is just outside the floodplain.

 Touring Berkshire Towns on Britannia: Abingdon
Abingdon is a town of three rivers: the Thames, the Ock and the hidden Stert all flow through the town.
There are pleasant walks along the Ock and the tow path of the Thames to Abingdon Lock and Abbey Meadow (in Oxfordshire) from where there are regular boat trips in the summer.
More regular are the (Mock) Mayor of Ock Street elections every June when the local Morris Dancers choose their leader.

On the nearest Saturday to 19th June the weekend is given over to Morris dancing and at 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon a new Mayor of Ock Street is elected and then carried shoulder high to all the pubs in Ock Street.
The River Ock joins the River Thames in Abingdon to the south of St. Helens Church.
There is conjecture that the Swift Ditch was once the original course of the River but it is now thought more likely that it is the channel dug across the Abbey Meadow by Abbot Ordric in 1052 to improve the course of the River through Abingdon.

The well-known Roman settlement at 'Frilford' - it is actually just in the parish of Marcham - sits at a point where the Roman road from Bicester to Wantage crosses the River Ock, the centre of a network of smaller Roman roads and settlement sites, including a villa only about a mile to the north-west.
It is approximately circular, about two hundred and thirteen feet in diameter, built into a narrow dry valley running south to the River Ock.
Though the whole Vale should probably be taken as a no-man's land between tribal kingdoms, the River Ock might represent a more specific border.

In the afternoon made E. by N. 6 miles to Sweet water river then N.E. 3 miles up it and camped.
by E. 4 miles to the junction of Wind river which comes from the W. turning around as I supose and running along Wind River Mountains which run N.W. Altogether they form a large and muddy river but fordable now which is after a heavy rain.

After several alienations and attainders, this Barony became extinct by the decease of Edward Courtenay, Earl of Devon, without issue, at Padua, in Queen Mary's reign, when his possessions were divided among the descendants of the four sisters of his great-grandfather; and Oakhampton Castle, with two-fourths of the manor, became the property of the Mohuns.
The latter, as represented in the annexed view, is nearly on a level with the top of the mount just mentioned which rises from the verdant meadows of the valley, and is skirted on one side by the western branch of the Ock river.
