  Cowpens National Battlefield - William Washington (U.S. National Park Service)
Washington had been trained for the ministry at the time of the outbreak of the Revolution but was commissioned as a Captain of the Third Virginia Continentals on February 25, 1776.
Washington's cavalry corps was present at the battle of Eutaw Springs, South Carolina on September 8, 1781.
Washington later recalled that his friend showed the same courage in the face of death as he did on the battlefield.

Surprisingly this town and road were not located in the mountains of the northeast, or in the desolate barrens of the pinelands.
It was a natural path that led down to the Passaic River and connected Washington Avenue (now Broadway) to River Road that led north along the river to Belleville.
When the early settlers of the village decided to widen the road to allow the passage of wagons to the river, the couple refused to vacate or move their cottage.

 Pennsylvania Turnpike-Delaware River Extension (I-276)
The groundwork for the Delaware River Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike was laid down in 1947, when the Federal Bureau of Public Roads (BPR) proposed a northern circumferential route through the Philadelphia suburbs along the current route of I-276.
The Mid-County interchange project was to connect the Delaware River and Northeast extensions of the Pennsylvania Turnpike with Ridge Pike and the new Mid-County Expressway / "Blue Route" (I-476).
At EXIT 339 in (PA 309) in Fort Washington, PennDOT (in conjunction with the PTC) is constructing new bridges to accommodate both the widened six-lane I-276 and the reconstructed Fort Washington Expressway (PA 309).

Presaging the automobile parkways of the 20th century, the speedway was flanked by trees and pedestrian walkways.
The new parkway was to incorporate sections of the existing "Harlem River Driveway," a boulevard along the river, and an arched viaduct approach to the 178th Street and 179th Street tunnels.

The Marcus-Grand Prairie Stage Road which was is use as early as 1873, was known locally as the Kettle River Stage Road by 1904.
Running along the banks of the Kettle River, the road was used during a defining period in Stevens County history which marked the emergence of the mining industry and early euro-American settlement.
The Kettle River Road served as a main travel route from towns such as Marcus, and was used heavily for freighting around the turn of the century.

The Lower Mad River trails goes down to the east from Maverick Saddle but has not recovered from fire damage in 1994.
Lower Mad River Trail is rocky and brushy with blow down trees from fire.
I haven't ridden the lower Mad River trial in a couple of years but it was after the huge fire they had up there and it really wasn't that bad.

In December of 1803, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark reached the Mississippi River in a keelboat full of supplies and the nucleus of the Corps of Discovery.
In commemoration of the Bicentennial of the departure of the Corps of Discovery, the Wood River Heritage Council has constructed a replica of the camp near where the original Camp DuBois was located.
The Wood River Heritage Council is also developing a calendar of special events and programs for many of the weekends during the summer of 2004.

At the North end of the campground the paved road turns left but you go straight on gravel to a T intersection, the Deep Creek campground.
It roughly follows the Chiwawa road and there are a number of places to bail.
I think the zilly and kirkendahl books call it "chiwawa loop road" and now one end of the loop road has been changed to "happy valley road" or something like that.
