		The shallow river barges that once sailed over 170 miles upriver beyond Shrewsbury to Welshpool all disappeared back in the 1890's, whilst the local style of down-river sailing barge, the Severn 'Trow' is now only represented by the restored 'Spry' preserved at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, and a few rotting wrecks.

		Today, the SRA is the oldest organization in the country dedicated to the preservation of a river, and one of the largest civic groups in Anne Arundel County with over seventy communities represented.

		As I said, this amazing river has had its Ups and Downs over the years and in 2000 was hit by some of the worst floods in my living memory and some of my favourite venues were unfishable for weeks on end.
		Like any big river, it is affected by rainfall in its hinterland and this in turn does affect the fishing but once it starts to fine-down, the Severn seems to recover fairly quickly, though never quickly enough of course, and the fishing seems to soon return to its former glory, sadly maybe not completely though.
		I love the River Severn from top to bottom, as you've probably already gathered, and I like the various sections each in their own special ways, but I have to confess a very soft-spot for its upper reaches and head-waters.

		In the US there are growing campaigns to remove weirs and dams of various sizes and return rivers to their natural state Some dramatic successes have been achieved.
