The River Swale has subsequently reworked the material in the valley bottoms to create the broad floodplain.
The drainage network at the top of the Swale is divided into a dense network of small tributaries that supply sediment from the moorland.
Sediment is transferred between the channel and its adjacent floodplain in a number of reaches throughout the Swale network and through these processes there is a turnover of sediment and a net transfer downstream.

The Swale family may have been good farmers but they were poor business people, all their lands were held by license from the Crown and it was necessary that from time to time the leases should be renewed.
There is one Swale in the 15th century who could hold the key and prove one way or another as to whether my own Swale family line is connected to Swale Hall, but to prove an ancestral line requires unbroken documentation, and going back to the 15th century or before is very difficult.

Forty years ago the Swale spate lasted about six days producing water levels that could be contained and managed by the river environs.
Such extremes cause havoc with the river's fragile ecosystem — upland becks run dry, Trout, if any are stranded and aquatic plant life struggles to find a foothold and that is just the start of the problem.

The Swale Way, which traces the course of the River Swale from its confluence with the River Ure in the Vale of York to its source in the windswept hills above Swaledale, is particularly enchanting.
From here, the trail returns to the river and follows footpaths linking pretty stone-built villages dotted along the dale to the hamlet of Keld and the gathering grounds of the Swale, through a landscape of drystone walls, flower-filled meadows and tiny field barns.

edie news centre - Last year’s floods have led to high levels of lead contamination
One of the most surprising findings of the study by the River Basin Dynamics and Hydrology Research Group at UWA’s Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences is high lead levels in sediment deposited overbank during 2000’s floods on agricultural land adjacent to the River Swale in North Yorkshire.
Earlier investigations by the Research Group have shown that the principal source of these contaminants is river bank erosion of floodplain soils in Swaledale that were polluted by mining activity in the 18th and 19th centuries.
More than 75% of the flood sediment samples analysed along a 69 mile (110 kilometre) length of the River Swale were found to exceed ICRCL (Inter-Departmental Committee on the Redevelopment of Contaminated Land) guidelines for maximum lead concentrations permitted in soils for grazing livestock, some by up to 1000%.

GENUKI: Richmond Parish information from National Gazetteer 1868.
It is situated on elevated ground near the river Swale.
Until about three centuries after the Norman conquest, Richmond is generally supposed to have carried on a good trade, but little is now done except in agricultural produce, and in retail trade for the supply of the agricultural district in the midst of which it is situated.
The want of water communication, owing to the natural obstructions of the river Swale, and the privileges granted by various sovereigns to neighbouring towns, have, no doubt, contributed to this result.
