The five tors which trend precipitously down to the brawling river are strewn with a profusion of clatters, concealed in many places by the heath and whortle-berry plants which grow thickly on the declivity.
At the head of the cleave is a small island which stand in the middle of the river Tavy, this area where the Rattlebrook/Dead Lake joins the Tavy is known as 'The Rocks'.
As far as legend and folklore go, Tavy Cleave is associated with the story of Essara the Bard, and the tale of Tamara and Tavy, apart from that I am aware of little else.

At the end of the tunnel the canal would emerge over 230 feet above the River Tamar, the committee had weighed up numerous options before plumping for an inclined plane but it turned out to be the largest of its kind ever built in Britain.
One arch of the disused Shallamill railway viaduct which crosses the River Lumburn also passes over the canal just before the waterway itself turns to cross the river on a single arched stone aqueduct.A few yards past the aqueduct is the former junction with the Millhill Cut.

 Village Story
It may have crossed the river at Harford Bridge to turn northwards to Mary Tavy, with the road to Tavistock only developing after the foundation of the Abbey in 983 a.d.
It is also possible that the main thoroughfare passed the church with the village green on its left towards the Inn fording the river north of the Colley Brook as shown on some old maps.
In the 17th century corn and sheep brought some affluence to Peter Tavy, the extensions to the church bear witness to this, but the village did not share to the same extent as its neighbours in the burgeoning mining industry.

Lane End Tavy Cleave to Fur Tor
Tavy Cleave is in fact a very steep sided valley and we were faced with a 450 feet climb up from the river up to the flat section of Standon Down.
After the initial steep section, going was fast and easy as we followed cattle tracks on a bearing of 250 degrees down to a third crossing of the river Tavy, and even easier than the other two crossings as we were only a mile from Tavy head.
When we reached the leat take off it was obvious that the river wasn't running as high as I had thought it might be and that the flat rocks appeared crossable.
