The river becomes tidal at Newton Abbot, and reaches the English Channel at Teignmouth.
The river lends its name to several places on the map in its thirty miles to the English Channel: Teigncombe, Drewsteignton, Teigngrace, Kingsteignton, Bishopsteignton, and finally Teignmouth.

The two branches of the river drop down from the moor to join near Chagford and the river soon plunges into the dramatic wooded gorge which starts beneath Castle Drogo and continues for about seven miles past Fingle Bridge and on to Clifford Bridge near Dunsford.

Heathfield station used to be called "Chudleigh Road" as it was the closest that the railway got to Chudleigh until the Teign Valley Railway was built in 1882.
The Teign Valley Railway was closed in 1958 and the rails were all lifted but a good detective can still follow most of its route and you can still find many traces of the railway such as bridges, level crossings, tunnels and stations.
