 CzechNymphs
The River Teviot in Scotland's Border region meanders from the hills to join the River Tweed at Kelso and is famous for big grayling, sometimes over 31b, and that's the mission today.
In normal Autumn and Winter levels on a freestone river, visibility through the water is virtually nil and, with the sun staying low in the sky even at midday, light penetration is minimal.
Rivers in Winter aren't always in flood and at times the weight of the heavier controlling fly needs to be reduced so that it still drifts along with the current.

In the higher, wetter and steeper catchments of the south and west of the catchment, rivers such as the Ettrick and Jed Water tend to rise and fall more quickly and have characteristic waterfalls and rapids.
With regards water quality, the Tweed is one of the least polluted rivers in the UK and a nationally important example of an easterly flowing eutrophic (nutrient rich) river system.

I fished Teviot alone this morning, which is unheard of at this time of year and despite fishing from the Wash Pool to the Bridge Pool, only saw one fish.
River levels have now dropped back to 2' and some salmon and sea trout are now being caught on beats around Kelso but the lower river continues to enjoy the best of the fishing.
Teviot looked promising at 1'9" this morning but by afternoon the water was coming away and most anglers went home to watch Scotland beat Wales 30-22.

I decided to fish Teviot this evening and caught my biggest ever brown trout from the river, a beautiful yellow bellied Teviot trout weighing around 4lb which fell to a size 12 dark olive and after a tremendous fight was returned safely to the river.
Both rivers are in excellent condition, clean, clear and steady with Tweed at 1'2" and Teviot 10" and fishing prospects continue to look good.
Tweed is now steady at 1' and Teviot 10", river temperature 52°F. Trout fishing remains poor, fly hatches have been sporadic and trout continue to feed on the bottom despite the rise in temperature.
