It is bounded on the north by Vasai Creek, on the northeast by the Ulhas River, on the east by Thane Creek and Bombay Harbour, and on the south and west by the Arabian Sea.
Vasai and Thane creeks are estuarine distributaries of the Ulhas River.
Further north on the western coast, the Oshiwara river empties into the Malad (or MarvГ©) Creek and the Dahisar River into the Gorai Creek.

These are the canes at the base of the Rajmachi fort.They are a group of 3-4 huge buddhist caves situated in the forest and not much frequented.They are a little above the banks of the river Ulhas.From Thakurwadi railway halt in the Karjat-Khandala section of the ghats,go down to river Ulhas.
In the monsoon, the Ulhas river wil be difficult to cross.

Physicochemical characteristics of water of Karwan river, Agra, U.P, India, were studied at various sampling stations in the stretch of 15 Km towards upstream from its merger into Yamuna to assess the magnitude of pollution.
The parameters showed that the river was highly polluted at station Ill in all the seasons due to the discharge of domestic and industrial effluents into it.
The radionuclide concentrations in Periyar river at the industrial zone showed significant reduction, by factors ranging form 3 to 5 during the post1980 period as compared to pre1980 due to better effluent treatment practices adopted by industrial units situated on the river bank.

 Bending the rivers to facilitate farming
According to the project, the water of Naar, Paar, Damanganga, Ulhas and Vaitarna rivers flowing westwards into the Arabian sea would be diverted into the Godavari and Tapi valleys.
The corporation has identified 27 bends in the river valleys: 11 in the Naar and Paar valley; 11 in the Damanganga valley and 5 in the Vaitarna valley.
According to officials the diversion of tributaries and rivers would be less expensive that regular irrigation schemes.

At 2:00 on Saturday afternoon, the final concrete was poured for the 2,309-meter-long, 185-meter-high main wall of the Three Gorges Dam, which by then began to have capacity of holding water.
The concrete placement of the Dam's main section was completed 10 months ahead of schedule, which will enable the Dam to start its role in power generation, flood control and shipping improvement in 2008, one year ahead of designated time.
This section of the Yangtze has a narrow river course which is inconvenient for shipping but boasts abundant hydroelectric resources.

While Ramesh Jadhav (Sena) wanted a more equitable distribution of available water resources, deputy mayor Uday Samel (Sena) wanted to find out why the administration was quiet about the fact that only two out of the 12 filtration and pumping units were working along the Ulhas river from where water is provided to the KDMC.
KDMC commissioner Madhukar Kokate said, ``Due to low water level there was a problem,'' adding, ``on our instructions to the Barvi dam authorities excess water was released from the Ulhas river and normal water supply has been resumed.'' However, it can happen again any time.
He pointed out that being at the tail end of a host of companies like the National Rayon Company, Century Rayon and others the KDMC always gets worst hit when the river levels dip.
