The River Usk, Afon Wysg in Welsh, rises in the mountains of mid-Wales then flows south-east through Abergavenny and the eponymous town of Usk to the Roman legionary fortress of Caerleon and the Bristol Channel at Newport.
It is the deepest river in the British Isles at its mouth and has the second largest tidal range in the world after the Bay of Fundy in Canada.
Evidence of the Usk's longstanding use in transport and trade came in the form of the remains of the Newport ship which were unearthed in July 2002.

The Ebbw River (Welsh: Afon Ebwy) is a river in south Wales.
The main Ebbw River is formed by the confluence of the two minor Ebbw rivers, Ebbw Fach, and Ebbw Fawr (the latter of which gives its name to Ebbw Vale).
The River Sirhowy flows into the Ebbw at Crosskeys, then the river continues through the town of Risca, then through the West of Newport, alongside Tredegar Park.

The source of the Usk River at SN 818239 can be found in a large expanse of rough boggy ground situated beneath the impressive escarpment of Fan Foel in the Carmarthen Fans.
Where it passes under the bridge entitled Pont ar Wysg (Bridge over the Usk) that carries the road to Llanddeusant this boundary is celebrated by a modest sign at a location that offers a particularly pleasant picnic location for families with fine views of the Carmarthen Fans on the horizon to the south.
Wysg or Usk is an ancient British word, signifying water, and is the same as the Irish word uisge or whiskey, for whiskey, though generally serving to denote a spirituous liquor, in great vogue amongst the Irish, means simply water.

In 1999 the Usk had highest estimated egg deposition of any British river south of Cumbria, and was one of the few rivers in England and Wales to exceed its spawning target for salmon.
The upper Usk may have acted as a ‘refuge’ during the decline of the 1950s, and had subsequently acted as a ‘source’ population for recolonisation of south-east Wales.

Usk was established in the mid 50s and was garrisoned by the Legio XX originally based at Gloucester.
Although Usk was situated on the river of the same name it could not be supplied by the river because it was not tidal this far inland and, indeed, the site was subject to flooding; a rare example of a badly sited Roman settlement.
The period of the 60s was a difficult one for the Roman occupation of Wales with numerous occurrences of guerrilla attacks by the native Siluran forces and Usk was finally abandoned in the late 60s, the garrison retiring to Wroxeter in the North.

The Usk reservoir can be found in the upper reaches of the Usk river valley.
The circular that passes near to the Usk reservoir from Trecastle to Llanddeusant onto Llangadog then Llandovery is one of the most scenic in the National Park offering stunning views of the Black Mountain and the river valleys of the Towy and the Sawdde.
It should be noted that this route and the the roads leading to and in the vicinity of the Usk reservoir are primarily single track and require careful driving.

Shortly after the attractive town of Usk the river becomes tidal and enters the estuary at Newport, where it mixes with the waters of the River Severn in the Bristol Channel.
As a salmon fishery the Usk is traditionally second only to the River Wye in Wales, although salmon only come to the upper reaches in Kite Country much later in the year.
For much of its route the canal runs parallel to the River Usk and there are many pretty little pubs at which to stop along the way, especially in the village of Talybont on Usk, some eight miles South-East of Brecon, where there are three (see Map 9).

Talybont-on-Usk lies between the River Usk and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal.
Whilst the village is on the Taff Trail "walkers' route", it is approximately half a mile away from the Cycle Route, but usually well worth a visit for refreshments and a rest.

Gwent Police have said it is still not clear what caused a car to leave the road and plough into the River Usk in south Wales, killing four men inside.
Divers, working in the pitch fl in deep and torrid water, were able to find the car on the river bed and the bodies of four men were recovered.
The road the car came off is the main route between Caerleon and Newport, and the scene of the accident is a secluded spot of the carriageway.
