River Wissey Navigation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The River Wissey was originally known as the River Wisse.
However, it is thought that the River Wisse originally ran north west of its current outflow at Hilgay to Outwell where it joined the Wellstream (made up of the waters of the River Great Ouse and River Cam).
During the Middle Ages the River Great Ouse was diverted away from the Wellstream towards King's Lynn and its new course cut directly across the River Wissey.

It is a tributary of the River Great Ouse.

It is also a good venue to target pike and zander, both are caught to a good size in this wide and slow deep part of the Ouse.
Our fishery extends for almost ten miles on both banks and the access by road is very good due to the river at most points being just over the flood bank and parking almost anywhere that does not cause obstruction.

Half way around the river bend is a lock which links the current navigable river to the narrow-looking, bendy, inner-course, which could well have been the original line of the river around the lake, replaced by the sweeping bend which was itself later replaced by the "New Cut" to the north of the lake.
The river is extremely easy to follow by car from Ely to Denver Sluice as there is always at least one road clinging to one of the banks.
In the Middle Ages the rivers Great Ouse and Cam had headed off to the north west a little further upstream and the water which is now the River Great Ouse to the north of Denver Sluice was once nothing more than a small stream.

The River Wissey seeps from scruffy fields and sullen scrub in a strangely empty sector at the heart of Norfolk, a little to the south of Dereham.
The ford at Bradenham is an impudent debut by the young stream, but soon the Wissey shyly retreats to wander through breck and warren.
Unnoticed, almost unknown, it grows from meagre ditch to minor stream to modest river, and by the time it reaches Stoke Ferry the Wissey is flowing more boldly across the flat fen landscape until finally it slips into the slow relentless water of the Great Ouse.

Earlier local consultation in the Wissey area had identified a need for greater access to the river, and for improvements to the environmental/ecological and visual interest of the river (which was canalised during the 19th century) as well as its surroundings.
Local terrain modification was carried out to 'dig' the course of the Wissey, as the resolution of the original OS data was insufficient to show this feature, and a stream effect was placed in the bed.
