The River Wyre is a river in Lancashire, England that flows into the Irish Sea at Fleetwood.
Rising in the Forest of Bowland in central Lancashire it flows south through Garstang where it meets its major tributary, the River Calder, followed by the River Brock.
Flowing west until it becomes tidal near Poulton-le-Fylde, it defines the north-eastern limit of the peninsula known as the Fylde.

Posted - 08 February 2006 : 10:19:39 PM might have a go at the pike this week-end never pike fished a river before and i don,t think i fancy live baiting so it may be smelt under a float and see what turns up size wise.
If the river is clear as with chub try under trees and rafts or in little cutouts in the bank but most of all have fun.

This page is a personal view of the villages "Over Wyre", and lying within the Borough of Wyre on the northern section of the Fylde plain.
Between Nateby, Pilling and Winmarleigh are some of the most isolated farmsteads you could imagine, with roads you really need a four wheel drive to negotiate, and which switchback up and down as the peat moss has sunk unevenly over the years.
Hambleton is just across the first land bridge over the River Wyre and, as a result, it is one of the most civilised parts of Over Wyre.

The Romans built a road through Preston to a settlement outside Kirkham fort and this continued westwards, probably towards a Roman port (Portus Setantiorum) thought to be situated two miles north of Fleetwood at the point where the River Wyre Discharges into the Lune Deeps.
Blackpool's early boundaries were within the township of Layton with Warbreck, part of the manor of Layton, which together with Bispham and Norbreck formed the ancient parish of Bispham or Biscopham as recorded in the Domesday Book.
In 1750 drainage dykes were cut from the Marton Mere to the River Wyre effectively reducing the size of the lake from around one square mile to 15 acres.

Between the banks of the River Wyre there were at one time six fords at intervals from the sea to Great Eccleston.
The first was at Wardleys where the Report of the Regional Planning Committe for the Area of the Fylde, 1937 recommended a bridge should be made, Shard Bridge, built in 1864, being old and inadequate.

Poulton-le-Fylde sits on the River Wyre to the east of Blackpool and was once an important port in the height of the cotton trade.
The River Wyre is a long walk from the town centre, but the roads around the town centre, enclose a natural square which is a focus for craft fairs in Summer and whose cobbles are largely traffic free, except for the occasional limousine, delivering a blushing bride to the gates of St Chad's church.
There are a few reminders of the town's former, more ribald, nature in the form of this whipping post and the stocks, seen in the photograph right.

A large proportion of the river valley here was excavated for gravel; I'm not sure when, but I suspect it was in the 1960s, when the nearby M6 motorway was constructed and required aggregate.

Working with fellow student Garth Grattrix, from Thornton-Cleveleys, the project resulted in local people tying yellow ribbons on the Shard Bridge over the River Wyre in protest against the subterranean gas storage proposal in the underground caverns close to the river.
Jacqueline feels the River Wyre is a beautiful, ancient tributary to the sea with an abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna, which have been taken for granted.
As part of the project, it is her intention to plant a wildflower pathway down to the headland and restore a derelict bench to encourage people to further the use of this area.

Its location alongside the main road makes it the most frequently seen medieval church in the Fylde.
Tradition has it that a church was built at this crossing of the River Wyre in c.640AD, at the time of the missionary and Archbishop of York, Paulinus.
