River des Peres - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The River des Peres is an urban river in St.
The name means "River of the Fathers", a reference to a mission which Catholic priests established in 1700 and abandoned in 1703, roughly 60 years prior to the founding of St. Louis.
Prior to that, a portion of the river which ran through Forest Park had been put underground in temporary wooden channels as part of the preparation for the 1904 World's Fair, which was held in the park.

The river is the River Des Peres, a harnessed channel that was transformed from a natural waterway into a massive civil engineering project in the early twentieth century.
Of course, the River Des Peres is not simply a deep gorge that carries away waste water from the city and its inner suburbs.
Today, the River Des Peres is a complicated and vital part of the second nature that keeps the Saint Louis urban area healthy for its human population.

The River des Peres' 114-square-mile watershed, spider-veined with the Deer and Gravois creek tributaries, spans the city and 42 county municipalities.
The River des Peres was always in such bad shape that Missouri's DNR never even bothered to formally excuse it -- so, by law, we're all supposed to be able to dive into the channel and take a big gulp.
The River des Peres, however, was not yet a sewer; it was still the "wild and uncontrollable prairie stream" that had carved the meadows, valleys, wetlands and bluffs of Forest Park.

One of those streams was the River Des Peres in St. Louis - known by the locals as the River Despair.
River Des Peres is one of those urban streams that have been subjected to much abuse.
Akin to urban streams throughout the country, there are also massive conduits leading to the River Des Peres that are euphemistically entitled "Combined Sewer Overflows." This is a nice way of saying that when it rains, stormwater is mixed with raw sewage and all of this dumps into the River Des Peres.

By joining these three rivers with the Missouri River through a series of interconnected greenways, parks and trails, the circle is completed, providing access to the River Ring throughout the St. Louis region.
Creating the River Ring, an interconnected system of more than 1,200 square miles of greenways along the Missouri, Mississippi, Meramec and Cuivre rivers, will not only enhance the social and environmental capital of the area, but also will be a catalyst for growth, Fisher says.
Although Great Rivers (formerly called the Metropolitan Park and Recreation District) generates about $10 million a year from the one-tenth of one-cent sales tax, the long-term economic impact could be worth billions.
