 Foreign and Domestic River Gunboats in China
Of the German gunboats in China during the relevant period, four were very large (900 to 1,100 tons) and I have doubts they could have traversed anything other than the lower waterways (but I have seen it stated that they could).
River gunboats were generally not designed to take to the open sea as their low drafts made them unstable.
The defining factor of a river gunboat is therefore whether she was able to manage upper river service, despite the fact that she may have only been able to so for several months out of the year.

One of six river gunboats built for use on the Yangtze Kiang in south central China, Oahu departed Shanghai on her shakedown cruise 3 November 1928, proceeding upriver to Chungking, 1300 miles inland, stopping at the open treaty ports enroute and returning to Shanghai 2 June 1929.
In the course of her service with the Yangtzc Patrol Force, thc gunboat convoyed Amerioan and foreign merchantmen up and down the river, supplied armed guards to U.S. and British river craft, landed bluejackets at treaty ports threatened by unrest and evaouated foreign nationals in times of danger.
Whenever the warship attempted to cruise the river on regular patrol, she was convoyed by Japanese minesweepers that kept watch on her movements while protecting her from attacks by their planes.

On the 29th, she joined another expedition up the Yazoo, and it resulted in the fall of the important fortifications on Haynes Bluffs on 1 May. That operation was the gunboat's last major role in the reduction of Vicksburg which surrendered to Union forces on Independence Day 1863.
The beginning of 1865 found her still on the White River; but, by May, she was at Memphis, Tenn. In June, Tyler moved to Mound City, 111., where she remained until sold at auction there on 17 August 1865 to Mr.
Tyler—a projected Buckley-class destroyer escort designated DE-567—was assigned to the United Kingdom on 10 June 1943; and her keel was laid down on 6 October 1943 at Hingham, Mass., by the Bethelehem Steel Co. The ship was launched on 20 November 1943 and delivered to the Royal Navy under lend-lease on 14 January 1944.

Several methods were used in the study to describe the magnitude and distribution of flow and salinity at the estuarine rivers along the southwest coastline of Everglades National Park (ENP).
Raw data at Turner River, Lopez River, and New River, were recorded by an electronic data logger and transmitted every 4 hours by way of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) into the database of the USGS Center for Water and Restoration Studies in Miami, Florida.

The enemy's gunboats were allowed to take on board their armaments, to receive their sailors, and with a fleet of transports and men to bring the first disaster to the Southern arms -- the capture of forts Donalson and Henry.
That same gunboat Carondelet was afterwards engaged in the Yazoo river by the Arkansas, under the heroic I. Brown, and after an action of twenty minutes (the Arkansas using only her two bow guns, 8 inch), the Carondelet was driven ashore riddled, disabled and colors down.
The river was obstructed by schooners anchored across the river, in line abreast, between the forts, and chains and lines were passed from vessel to vessel; but a passage was left open near each bank.

Assigned to the Yangtze Patrol (YangPat) and redesignated a river gunboat (PR-4) on 16 June 1928, Tutuila cruised on shakedown up the Yangtze River from Shanghai to I'Chang, where she joined sister ship Guam (PR-3) in mid-July.
Convoying river steamers through the upper reaches of the Yangtze on her first passage through the scenic gorges, she flew the flag of Rear Admiral Yates Stirling, Jr., Commander, Yangtze Patrol (ComYangPat).
Then, under terms of lend-lease, the United States leased the gunboat to China on 19 March 1942, her name becoming Mei Yuan which can be translated as "of American origin." The name Tutuila was struck from the United States Navy list on 26 March 1942.

The bluffs on the Neuse overlooking White Hall, remembered Colonel Pool, "were crowded with piles of crude rosin, and barrels of spirits of turpentine." To keep Foster's troops from crossing the river here, the Confederates gathered these combustibles onto the bridge and set them ablaze, just as the enemy was arriving on the opposite bank.
Foster's forces, "in order to cast a heavy reflection of light on the enemy," seized materials on the south side of the river intended for use in construction of the vessel and put them to the torch.
The vessel was a small one, flat bottomed, intended for fast river navigation [and] designed for one or two guns." On the morning of December 16, the fight continued at White Hall and the Neuse was struck many times by the exchange of shot and shell.

It is a gaming interpretation of the Nile gunboat Safieh, converted from a small sidewheel river steamer, which participated in Wolesley's unsuccessful expedition to relieve Gordon at Khartoum, 1884-85.
These engravings are reproduced in Khartoum 1885 - General Gordon's Last Stand, by Donald Featherstone, Osprey Books, 1993.
The Major General strongly recommends this book for anyone interested in the Nile gunboats or the Khartoum Relief Expedition.
