River inputs present a difficult monitoring problem because of the number of streams and rivers discharging to the Bay and the unpredictable nature of storm events and associated river flows.
The rivers that are being monitored have been selected to capture runoff from as much of the Bay watershed as possible and to obtain the maximum coverage of the range of different sources of runoff to the Bay and its tributary estuaries.
River input and point source data are shown with a standard scale on Maps 13 and 14 to emphasize the relative magnitude of the loads.

The International St. Croix River Board of Control was established in 1915 and monitored compliance with the requirements of the Orders of Approval issued by the Commission for the dams on the St. Croix River at Forest City, Vanceboro, Grand Falls and Milltown.
It’s mandate is to assist the Commission in preventing and in resolving disputes regarding the boundary waters of the St. Croix River, to monitor the ecological health of the St. Croix River boundary waters aquatic ecosystem, and to ensure compliance with the Commission’s Orders of Approval for structures in the St. Croix River.

This unit is located on the Black Warrior River in Alabama and is used to monitor and control the flow of effluent into the river from coal-bed methane gas wells.
The river flow sensor is a paddle switch which is activated from the hydrostatic pressure produced by water flow.
The discharge of effluent into the river is controlled at the RTU, with the parameters being input at the base, which are then forwarded to the remote unit.

As the Jan. 9 National Academy of Science report on the Missouri makes abundantly clear, the river’s ecosystem is in serious decline, and action must be taken quickly to reverse that trend.
The report also stated the obvious: Restoring some semblance of the river’s natural flow is the key ingredient in bringing the Missouri back to health.
A river that looks and acts more like a river than a ditch would be a much better attraction for fishing, hunting, boating, camping, hiking and a host of other outdoor pursuits.

On April 29, 1861 the Secretary for the Navy received a letter from a St. Louis businessman, James B. Eads, which was the trigger event for the eventual Union victory in the west.
In the letter Eads suggested that the Union acquire Mississippi River Snag boats, which were shallow draft, heavily built boats designed to remove river snags and raise sunken boats.
All of the subsequent and minor campaigns are also touched upon such as the White River venture in Arkansas, the Red River Campaign in 1864 and operations up the Alabama rivers from Mobile in 1864 and 1865.
