Boston.com / Sports / Football / Patriots / Belichick's job is to find the right man
If the Chargers pass on Eli Manning and trade down, they're expected to take North Carolina State quarterback Philip Rivers, who from the sounds of it is Peyton Manning with a funky delivery and whom Smith rates in the same class with Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger.
Rivers will be at Madison Square Garden for the draft, along with Manning, Gallery, Roethlisberger, Virginia Tech cornerback DeAngelo Hall, Texas wide receiver Roy Williams, and Miami (Fla.) tight end Kellen Winslow Jr.
"If they draft Philip, in three years they'll be playing in the Super Bowl," said Southern Cal offensive coordinator Norm Chow, who coached Rivers at N.C. State.

 SI.com - Writers - King: Chargers should trade down for Rivers - Monday April 12, 2004 3:49PM
Rivers is not only in Manning's league, he might be better. And the value gained by dealing down and picking up extra picks could be a boost for this moribund franchise -- a much bigger boost than the Chargers would get by just sitting there and taking the big college star.
And no matter what the Chargers say if they take Rivers, my guess is a majority of the town will throw tomatoes at the side of Qualcomm Stadium on draft day if they come away with Rivers and not Manning.
* Philip Rivers holds the NCAA record with 51 starts, but two of those starts were in bowl games in 2000 and 2001.

In the 2004 NFL Draft, Rivers was obtained in a draft-day trade with the New York Giants -- the Chargers drafted quarterback Eli Manning with the first overall pick, and subsequently traded him to the Giants in exchange for Rivers and some additional draft picks.
Rivers shattered almost every NC State and Atlantic Coast Conference passing record in his career which culminated with his record 51st college start establishing a new benchmark for consistency in college football.
Due to protracted contract negotiations Rivers reported to the team very late in the pre-season process and as a result the Chargers gave incumbent quarterback Drew Brees the opportunity to retain his starting job at the beginning of the season.

Rivers probably will seek to be compensated as the first pick in the draft after being acquired in a trade for the player (Eli Manning) who was taken No. 1 overall.

San Diego Hall of Champions - Chargers draft defense first
The selection of Merriman is the fourth player the Chargers have added to their roster as a result of the Manning trade that netted quarterback Philip Rivers and three draft picks.
Merriman was the 12th pick of Saturday's draft, a choice the AFC West champions acquired a year ago from the New York Giants as part of the Eli Manning trade on Draft Day that was engineered by general manager A.J. Smith.
Merriman’s nickname is "Lights Out" for his heavy hits, but he also fits the mold of quicker, smaller defensive ends who can rush the quarterback such as Indianapolis’ Dwight Freeney (6-1, 268), Miami’s Jason Taylor (6-6, 255) and Baltimore’s Terrell Suggs (6-3, 260).

I, too believe he will be among the best, but if salaries didn't come into play, and if I could trade for Peyton Manning for this upcoming season, I would do it.
Byron can't keep leading the Jags to losing seasons because he already has led us to a winning season.

Buffalo Bills Message Board -> J.p. Losman - Broken Leg
Losman, 23, was the fourth quarterback chosen in the first round this year, behind Eli Manning, Philip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger, but there are some scouts who felt that he was every bit as good as those prospects, and even superior in some areas.
Losman was the second of the Bills' two choices in the first round, and Buffalo had to trade up into Dallas' spot at No. 22, sacrificing their first-round pick in 2005, to get him.
Losman, the second of the team's two first-round draft picks, has been guilty of taking unnecessary hits from defenders as opposed to sliding to avoid the hit.
