And yet within just two months he and his scarecrow army had knocked the Piedmontese out of the war, driven the Austrians half way across Italy and laid siege to the fortress of Mantua, the capture of which was essential for the control of northern Italy.
From there the author takes us on a journey with Napoleon and his army as they march and battle against the combined forces of the Allied armies in Italy.
He starts the book with a number of chapters outlining the French and Austrian armies, their weapons and tactics, and a brief account of Napoleon's rise to the command of the French armies in Italy.

Battle of Rivoli - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Battle of Rivoli was fought on January 14–January 15, 1797 at Rivoli Veronese (near Verona) in Italy and resulted in a victory for the French under General Bonaparte against the Austrians under General Alvinczy.
Alvinczy's plan was to overwhelm Barthelemy Catherine Joubert in the mountains east of Lake Garda with the concentration of five seperate columns, and thereby gain access to the open country north of Mantua where Austrian superior numbers would be able to defeat Bonaparte's smaller Army of Italy.
The Rue de Rivoli, a street in central Paris, is named after the battle.
