Riyoko Ikeda article by P. Duffield
Ikeda was so moved by the book, she wanted to write a story set in pre-revolutionary France.
Aside from Ikeda's innate ability to create characters with dramatic internal and external conflicts, early on, Ikeda developed her own system of artistic iconography to heighten the emotions of her characters.
Ikeda's stories have a depth and complexity which reflect her background in philosophy, her passion for history, and her well-read intellect.

Ikeda made her debut in 1967 with "Bara-Yashiki no Shoujo" (The girl from the rose mansion) in Shoujo Friend when she still was a philosophy student.
Ikeda did a very good job, with excellent characters and situations and successfully mixed historical facts with her own fiction.
Another masterpiece by Ikeda, this one was very controversial back when it was published as it deals with themes like lesbianism, drugs and suicide.

 RIYOKO IKEDA

At the rythm of Claudine's romances, Riyoko Ikeda shows us her changes, her hatred against a society which can't understand her, and her disenchantment.
Riyoko Ikeda depict in Claudine a closed-minded society, which rejects its own children, and of which mindset still endures nowadays.
The ones who don't know Riyoko Ikeda might be at first disconcerted by her lines quite "old school" (her style is rather similar to the ones of Keiko Takemiya or Moto Hagio), but its realism will definitely enthralled you.

It was announced on 10/2 that Riyoko Ikeda, author of the infamous "The Rose of Versailles," has been working on a comic adaptation of the Yukio Mishima classic, Spring Snow.
Mishima novels have rarely been adapted as manga, mainly for the sake of remaining true to the distinct style of his writings, but his family has agreed to this recent endeavor, being that 2005 marks exactly 80 years since his birth and 35 since his death.

 Rose of Versailles
Hailing from 1972 - 1973 and the relatively less popular realm of girls' (shoujo) manga, with a plot centered far from Japan and hundreds of years in the past, this series nevertheless spawned an animated series, a movie and even a play.
It was written for a female audience that was not too particular about historic accuracy—and not just in regards to the highly exaggerated glamour and romance of Ikeda's Versailles.
The premise a girl could be raised to become a palace guard in 18th century France requires quite a suspension of disbelief, even though it is a central theme of the story.

Berusaiyu no Bara or The Rose of Versailles is a historical fantasy, written by Riyoko Ikeda, set in France in the years before the French Revolution.
Oscar, the story's central character and a creation of Ikeda, is a girl raised by her father as a man, who commands the palace guards at Versailles.
