Rizal is a mountainous province perched on the western slopes of the southern portion of the Sierra Madre mountain range.
The territory occupied by the previous 26 towns of Rizal Province began with the organization of the Provinces of Tondo and La Laguna during the Spanish administration.

Four soldiers and a militiaman were killed in an encounter with New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Rizal, Cagayan Valley, a military spokesperson said Monday.
Troops from the Army's 17th Infantry Battalion were reportedly conducting combat patrol operations in Sitio Escolta, Barangay Dungan when they chanced upon some 30 members of the communist group, said Armed Forces spokesperson Daniel Lucero.
They were all rushed to Cagayan Valley Medical Center.
