When I saw the "Rize" trailers at first I was afraid that this would be yet another movie depicting the African-American experience through slanted and distorted filters ignorance and the media would have "White America" and the rest of the world believe.
If you have read the other reviews and summaries for this movie me telling you about the "plot" or "characters" is a waste of space.

 Rize (2005): Reviews
As long as it showcases the art of krump, underscoring the dancers with ominous hip-hop beats, Rize is such a vibrant eruption of motion and attitude that you can forgive the film for being disorganized and too skimpy on street-dance history.
Rize shows how clowning led to krumping, and argues that its practitioners' fierce dedication to dance has saved countless kids from drugs, crime and gangs.
Rize eventually gets a little preachy and sentimental, but a little sermonizing seems a small price to pay for such an industrial jolt of kinetic electricity.

 Rize (2005) - MovieWeb
"Rize" reveals a groundbreaking dance phenomenon that’s exploding on the streets of South Central, Los Angeles.
“Rize” tracks the fascinating evolution of the dance: we meet Tommy Johnson (Tommy the Clown), who first created the style as a response to the 1992 Rodney King riots and named it “Clowning”, as well as the kids who developed the movement into what they now call Krumping.
The kids use dance as an alternative to gangs and hustling: they form their own troupes and paint their faces like warriors, meeting to outperform rival gangs of dancers or just to hone their skills.

The visually stunning "Rize" is a specifically focused introduction to a hyperkinetic style of hip-hop dance that's far more athletic, and aggressive, than break dancing.
But what "Rize" reveals is that in disenfranchised communities beset by multiple blights of poverty, drugs and gang violence, there have always been stubborn, heroic artistic responses.
The stars of "Rize" are the dancers themselves, from Tommy (who is deservedly proprietary and suffers for it) and young krump pioneers Lil C, Tight Eyes and Dragon (now studying to be a minister), to a pair of battling ladies, La Nina and the utterly charismatic Ms.

FilmJerk.com - Film Review: Rize   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The battle between the Krumpers and the Clowns is captured in the documentary, “Rize.” Directed by music video menace David LaChapelle, “Rize” works when he just puts a camera on the dancing and leaves the visuals alone.
Tommy is a warm personality, and his desire to help his community is one of the bright spots of the film, especially when that desire is unexpectedly violated with vandalism and theft after his Clowning gang gets the best of the Krumpers at a local competition.
“Rize” has energy, but it comes across in a Gap commercial way that doesn’t do justice to what these residents are trying to accomplish and escape from.

San Francisco Bay Guardian | Arts and Entertainment
One of the most exciting things about Rize is its success at capturing and enhancing human feats of creation – more than once, a god-kissed sun ray beams down on the dancers as their cathartic movements accelerate against an electric-blue sky.
The dancers – in particular, a powerhouse named Miss Prissy – are amazing, from 300-pound-plus Big X to a little girl, all of four years old, throwing her coat on the floor with fierce concentration before wilding out.
But Rize still presents the closest thing to a hero you're likely to find in the multiplex this year – and not just one, but two, three, four, or more of them.
