Rjukan is the centre of Tinn municipality in Telemark, Norway.
Rjukan was also the location during World War II of a heavy-water plant used by Nazi Germany, which was investigating the possibility of building an atomic bomb.
However, Hans Suess, a German nuclear specialist stationed at Rjukan, said that it would take five years to upgrade the plant to produce militarily useful quantities of heavy water.

Incidentally, originally Rjukan was the name of the waterfall, meaning "the smoking", referring to the waterfall spray.
Rjukan was a natural place for power stations, and since long transmission lines were rather lossy those days, Rjukan was also chosen as the site for the production.

 The Heroes of Telemark - Hydro
Water was dripping in a hydrogen plant at Rjukan in Telemark, Southern Norway, as it had done since1934.
Norwegians in London assisted in the plans to sabotage the heavy water unit at the Vemork power plant at Rjukan, and photographs and sketches of the plant were sent to London by Norwegian contacts at the facility, in particular Jomar Brun, manager of the heavy water unit.
The Rjukan plants were heavily bombed in the autumn of 1943.

The railway connection from Rjukan to Notodden and then on to Herøya had to be longer.
The Rjukan railway was an ambitious project to prvoide a transport route to the coast so that raw materials could be brought in to and finished fertilizer products sent out from the Rjukan factories.

Having said this, most of the icefalls are in the southern half of the country, within a two to three hour drive from Oslo, as further north (around Trondheim) the snowfalls are so great and the daylight hours so restricted, that there isn't a lot of accessible ice climbing.
The pictures below show two of the classic Rjukan ice climbs, the picture on the left is of a curtain of ice, whilst the photo on the right is a pillar of ice.
Both are grade V. The reason that the Rjukan region gets such good icefalls is that the orientation of the valley ensures that there are a lot of North facing slopes, and there are a lot of seepage lines and streams running into the main River Mana.

From the factory site at Rjukan, a very steep industrial side track with a grade of over five percent clung to the mountainside on its way up to the first hydro-electric plant in the areal, Vemork.
In the summer of 1991, both the factories in Rjukan and the Rjukan railway were closed down, but the track is still in good condition.
The Norwegian Directorate for the Cultural Heritage have placed the Rjukan Railway and the ferries on a preservation list with large technical and industrial monuments that must be given priority on a national basis.

The result being that nobody wanted to prepare their own, and we all walked over to the hotel the next morning.
He was the most typical front runner, and now people started biking while he was still trying to get on some dry clothes.
