While well-planned competitive bicycling events are encouraged, it is imperative that race promoters understand the processes and cooperate with state and local agencies to ensure the safety of all involved.
North Carolina law requires approval from the North Carolina Department of Transportation for all bicycle races to be held wholly or partially on state-maintained roads.
Race promoters are also required to contact the appropriate state or local law enforcement agency responsible for the roads being used in any race to coordinate road and intersection closures as well as safety procedures that might be needed.

Bicycle races are usually divided up according to these age-based classes and experience-based categories, and riders strive to achieve results and gain experience in order to justify upgrading to more competitive categories.
The Louisiana/Mississippi Bicycle Racing Association (LAMBRA) is the official point of contact for race permitting, officiating, event coordination, rider licensing, rider upgrades, etc. In order to compete in USCF-sanctioned events (all major races and the District Championships), you must join the United States Cycling Federation.
Within a given event, races may be held for a number of age divisions, at the discretion of the race organizers.
