Michigan routes are refered to "M" routes because of the M at the top of the sign.
This aluminum sign probably dates back to the early 60's as it has a Scotchlite background.
Signs in the early Rand McNally Road Atlases show the logo "STATE TRUNK HIGHWAY" just below the "M", but it is unknown right now whether signs actually bore that logo.

The new Clearview road sign typeface is so much more legible than the existing typeface that it gives drivers going 55 mph added seconds to respond to directions.
Their goal was to improve road sign legibility and recognition at night, especially for older drivers.

This two-page photo collection is a subset of the Road Photos collection for my Hawaii Highways site, focusing on road signs I found throughout the islands on my trips there in autumn 1999, May 2000, and November 2001, as well as a few photographed by others (all photos are mine unless otherwise noted).
Instead, where the start and finish of the road is not obvious, there is normally a zero milepost at one end (see above), and a terminal milepost indicating the ending mileage to two decimal places (see left, mile 3.49 at the north end of route 51 on Kauai).
Some of the signs on local streets directing traffic to the Interstates look like the photo immediately to the right, with hyphenated route numbers, and including the state name (as if it were ever necessary to remind people that they're in Hawaii!).

The tragic death of triathlete John Reif on Wild Horse Creek Road in Chesterfield in August 1987 prompted the erection of the first "Share the Road" signs in the area in 1990.
The "Share the Road" message was preferred by almost 90% of respondents and more than half said this message should be an informational sign rather than a warning or regulatory sign.
Some, including myself, have expressed a preference for a sign telling motorists they are expected to "Share the Road" with bicyclists and "It's the Law" to do so, rather than one simply conveying the message that there may be a bicyclist on the road.

Among the most interesting signs that somehow manages to survive, referring the traveller to directions to the "Maryland John F. Kennedy Hwy.," which would now be designated on signs as a simple "95" in an Interstate style shield.
In the age of ultra-reflective signs, the existence of pressed or embossed surface signs is very sporadic.
It seems odd to expect a vintage crossbuck Railroad Crossing Sign to survive at a well used intersection, but sure enough, this sign posted at the CSX crossing at Waterview Avenue near Cherry Hill does just that, complete with splintered wooden post, and supplemented by a newer "up to code" version.
