  Books - Roadmarks
Roadmarks is a novel written by Roger Zelazny during the late 1970s (published 1979).
In Roadmarks, the central theme is time travel using a highway that links all times and all possible histories.
These include a dragon who falls in love with a tyrannosaur, an ancient Sumerian who buries artifacts later to be found by himself as archaeologist, and the brief appearances of pulp heroes and real people.

 Roadmarks...Again
Yes, the Amber series seems to be the most popular, but some of his one work volumes cover much the same ground, and in my opinion, oftentimes to better effect...kind of how a very well written short story can have a much better impact than a thousand page tome.
Damnation Alley, Roadmarks, the Changeling books, all these deal with the "alternate" or "ultimate" reality.
But the Amber series does seem to incorporate all the different aspects into one all encompassing idea, albeit in more of a soap opera-esque, theme park kind of way!:~) I'm always on the look out for another Zelazny title I've not acquired.

The book focuses upon a man who spends a good deal of time actually on the Road, and his attempts to find out who has hired assassins to kill him, and why (while remaining alive).
I have not read it in some time, but recall that it was one of the most enlightening books I had ever read; it is, in my opinion, a better book than any in the Amber series, not least because Zelazny had the grace to publish only one book in the Roadmarks universe.
I found it easy to sympathise with the main character, and was pleasantly surprised by the ending.

SF REVIEWS.NET: Roadmarks / Roger Zelazny
With only 185 pages, Zelazny delivers a witty and dreamlike tale that could easily have been expanded into a dreary and overly serious epic.
Resisting the temptation is commendable (Zelazny never really went in for overlong books as a rule, a lesson many current writers would do well to adopt), even if it means that contemporary readers, used to having everything spelled out for them, might find bits of Roadmarks maddeningly vague.
Yes, Zelazny does resolve his story while leaving some unanswered questions, and I admit that I didn't think Chadwick's motivations for wanting Dorakeen assassinated were as clear as they should have been, and this made me feel less concern over Dorakeen's safety than I should have.

While Zelazny may be better known for his Amber series, his other works well deserve notice too.
I was re-reading his 1979 novel "Roadmarks" last week and found myself enjoying it so much that I had to review it for Aphelion.
The story is basically one of growth and change for the main characters, but structured so that events that happen simultaneously are given the same chapter numbers no matter where they happen to be in the book.
