Encyclopedia: Roadrailer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
In railroad terminology a roadrailer is a highway trailer that is specially equipped for use in railroad intermodal service.
The advantage of using roadrailers is that due to their construction, the trailers can be pulled directly behind other freight equipment without the use of trailer flatcars.
More modern roadrailers do not include integrated railroad wheels, but ride on specially manufactured bogies that do double-duty serving as articulation points between multiple trailers in a train.

RoadRailer, notes Wabash National, is currently the only bimodal system approved in the United Kingdom, "and is therefore the only such system that will be able to move freight via rail from inland points direct to the European continent via the Channel Tunnel." RoadRailer BiModal Ltd., a Wabash National British subsidiary, spearheaded the approval effort.
RoadRailer has thrived as a division of Wabash National, which has grown in nine years from a small operation of 16 persons to a major producer of aluminum plate and fiberglass-reinforced plastic trailers with almost 2,600 employees.
