While monsoons are being blamed for the road condition, a drive to Mulshi dam via the Paud village road is enough evidence to expose the civic babus and political leaders who blame the rain for the sorry state of affairs of Pune's roads.

 News: Vox Populi
Pune is known as the Accident Capital of India if not the World, At least 7 fatal accidents take place everyday, yet the authorities seem not to take any action or steps to make the roads of the city safer.
Widening of roads is not just a question of reducing the time to travel from place A to place B. It has implications on the pollution in the city, fuel consumption etc. So just stating that 'since the traffic is always going to increase, we should just sit down and do nothing' is ridiculous.
The problem in pune is not just the width of the roads but the way the city was planned (if it was ever planned!!) With proper town planning, congestion on the roads can be maintained under a certain level.

PUNE, Jan 6: Even as the road safety week is being observed, Puneites would shudder from the fact that the city roads have claimed more lives than the highways in 1998.
The mishap figures from January to November last year speak for themselves: The Mumbai-Pune highway stretch witnessed 53 mishaps, 20 mishaps occurred on Pune-Satara highway, 19 on the Pune-Solapur highway, 12 on the Pune-Ahmednagar highway and eight mishaps took place on the Pune-Nashik highway.
Increasing number of vehicles with each passing day, lack of traffic discipline and road safety awareness, coupled with encroachments and bad condition of the roads have been cited as the main reasons for the soaring mishaps.
