Cruising the Bahamas with Columbus, 1492
Columbus wrote, "in the island's center there is a very large lagoon." From Columbus' Egg Island anchorage you too can look eastward across the 20,000-acre roadstead centered between you and the main island of Eleuthera.
Some Royal Island natives hailed his boat but Columbus wrote: "I was afraid (to come ashore) seeing the great ledge of rocks that encircled the whole of that island." You won't meet any Indians beckoning you ashore, but Royal Island's south coast is still lined with the jagged aeolian limestone ledge that kept Columbus away.
According to his log, the Admiral saw "a harbor large enough for all the ships in Christendom..." Eleuthera's lagoon (roadstead) is big enough--much larger than the Cuban lagoon Columbus later described as a harbor "large enough for all the ships in Spain."

Cherbourg did not have the full facilities to accommodate the large steamers in her docks, so any ships would have to be anchored out in the roadstead and serviced by company tenders, which would steam out to a ship to embark or disembark passengers, baggage, and small items of cargo.
On 14th June, 1911, the two Cherbourg tenders serviced Olympic on her maiden voyage, and on 10th April, 1912, they serviced Titanic, although it would be the first and only time.
Titanic arrived late because of the near-miss with New York soon after leaving Southampton, and dropped anchor in the roadstead at 6.30p.m., about 1 hour late.

As Many Ships As There Are In The Whole Christendom
The only logical conclusion is that Columbus must have been describing two distinct parts of that harbor; the first, an immense roadstead where ships could ride safely at anchor while awaiting their turn to enter the second part, a small inner harbor thoroughly sheltered from those pervasive trade winds and oceanic surges.
In fact, Columbus sometimes did incorporate the outer roadstead when dimensioning a small protected inner harbor as demonstrated by his December 21st sizing of tiny “Puerto de la Mar de Santo Thomas” as “five leagues,” a span which does just happen to precisely fit the length of its protected, though unenclosed, outer roadstead.
While a number of the Bahama Islands have enclosed inner harbors snuggled behind large sheltered roadsteads, only a few of these are located near eastern approaches to this archipelago.
