From a pure economic standpoint, the late summer hepatitis A outbreak in Tennessee could not have struck a more precise and destructive blow to Roane County, a small, rural community of 52,000, 45 minutes west of downtown Knoxville.
Michael L. Smith, 55 when he died Oct. 26, was president of the Roane Alliance, which directs Roane County's economic development and tourism efforts.
He was very effective in his job," said James Gann, chairman of Roane Alliance and administrator of Roane Medical Center, where Smith died nearly two months after falling ill. Although an official determination on his death is still pending, his family has filed suit against the restaurant where Smith often scheduled business lunches.
