I recently read the article in the South Community Review, "Mayor's garbage user fee doesn't raise a stink at U of M." Rob Altemeyer says the controversy over garbage user fees "puzzles me." Well, I oppose the idea of the garbage user fees.
As well, it probably is true that even large households probably can't accumulate more that two bags of non-recyclable garbage per week.
Rob Altemeyer says that all the fuss, "can't be a money issue." Of course it is. I also find it so ironic that many students are fine with this proposal.

Rob Altemeyer, the Waste Minimization Coordinator for the University of Manitoba and coordinator of the University of Manitoba Recycling and Environmental Group (UMREG), says students can feel they played a pivotal role in the passing of the motion.
While he views the new program as a step in the right direction for Winnipeggers, he points out that opponents of the plan have made it very difficult for implementation by not passing the user fee.
"I would love to see the diversion rate [of recyclable materials] increase," said Altemeyer, "but if the city does not have the resources to implement the apartment recycling, it will not be met." Altemeyer adds the fee not only would have provided motivation for recycling, but also the revenue to implement an expanded recycling program.

Played on a hand-painted world map, the Global Change Game has players represent nine regions of the world and make decisions on everything from energy use to warfare, said Rob Altemeyer, the executive director of the Global Change Game.
Speaking from the second stop on the Nunavut tour, Altemeyer said the 100 students who took part in the game at Jonah Amitnaaq Secondary School in Baker Lake were more than capable of dealing with world affairs.

Rob Altemeyer of the University of Manitoba Recycling and Environmental Group (UMREG) and Waste Prevention Coordinator of the U of M says the true battle lies in whether or not the rest of the city councillors adopt the mayor's initiative.
Altemeyer also said that UMREG is currently working with the Environmental Science Students' Association and the Mayor's Office to bring Murray to the U of M campus for Environmental Awareness Week, which will take place from January 29 to February 2.
According to Diane Poulin, the mayor's media representative, there have been no estimates on how much such a plan may cost the city, because the agenda is still in the idea stage.
