Rob Crow - February 28th, 2007 in Cambridge, MA
For those not in the know, Rob Crow is a multi-instrumentalist, and musical genius, who, generally, writes warm and simple pop songs, and performs them in the most disjointed and convoluted ways possible.
However for his encore, a tired Crow returned to the stage alone, and, after warning the audience he was risking an embolism, ran through two sincere, although irreverent, covers: "Astro Zombies" by The Misfits, and "Minor Threat" by Minor Threat.
The secret of Rob Crow remained safely in the hearts of those forty fans who came out to TT the Bear's, and despite Rob Crow's recent surrender into his own pleasant pop world, I'm pretty sure there will be no tour bus present at his next solo performance.

Rob Crow bounces around a lot, from the assorted weirdness of Thingy to his fondness for the Optigan, an obscure type of organ noted primarily for its legendary unreliability.
Crow is the front man for Pinback, and this is the story of how he casually made the best record of his career, and why it's called "Living Well".
I can only conclude by saying that Rob Crow is unlike any pop musition I have ever encountered in all my years of listening to music, he has far more in common with classical composers then he does rock musitions in that his gift for music has shown no signs of deterioration.

Crow has released a pair of solo CDs that are distinctly odd even for this quirky musician.
Crow 's scribbled liner note explains that the songs were recorded with a four-track cassette deck in the apartment next door to his and Tenuta 's, on equipment belonging to Heavy Vegetable bassist Travis Nelson.
Crow followed his solo sojourn with the duo Optiganally Yours, a duo of Crow on vocals and Optigan (an inexpensive home keyboard instrument from the '60s that plays sounds stored on discs) player Pea Hix.

Rob Crow: My Room Is a Mess - PopMatters Music Review
The one sheet that accompanied this disc declares Rob Crow to be a songwriting genius, throwing out any genre-imposed boundaries that afflict his contemporaries.
Crow seems to avoid committing emotionally or musically to his songs, and if he doesn't care about them, why should I? Rob Crow has been nothing short of a prolific performer on the San Diego scene.
Crow is a gifted and capable songwriter, but listening to My Room Is a Mess you can almost feel the smirk that must've been on Crow's face as he recorded this album in his bedroom.

Thingy: To the Innocent: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The silly, self-indulgent, cute words Rob Crow sang on Heavy Vegetable's albums were to Ewoks as their dark, masterfully played, and rhythmically compelling music was to all of "The Empire Strikes Back." Rob Crow's third orbital shell holds Thingy's first record, Songs about Angels, Evil, and Running Around on Fire.
Rob Crow Likes "Star Wars:" Forget that a track from Songs about Angels is mysteriously entitled "Semolina/Kessel Run." Let's just consider the bewilderingly pretty, acoustic-strummed, and vocally harmonized "O.B. 1," one of To the Innocent 's numerous high points.
Rob Crow hasn't stopped being the quirkiest pop writer ever to put intense, jagged, and complex rhythmic guitar-rock where his mouth is. Thingy still juxtaposes fuzz-washed, syncopated verse with warm-toned arpeggio breakdowns.

Rob Crow — “My Room Is a Mess” (printable version)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
A complex solo excursion is made by Rob Crow, leader of several San Diego bands including current indie favorite Pinback.
Crow’s lyrics are mostly acerbic takes on religion, the workplace and life’s trials, but he’s also capable of joyousness: “Last Bus From the Che” is a wonderful encapsulation of watching a show by a band you love.
Several songs are a bit interchangeable, but Crow has such a memorable, distinctive sound that you’ll pull “Room” out of the stack when you need to hear his singular songs.

Rob Crow was the singer and guitarist of Heavy Vegetable, a band that showed promise with each of the four tracks on the EP A Bunch of Stuff (The Way Out Sound, 1993), particularly Doesn't Mean Shit, and then redefined progressive hardcore on The Amazing Undersea Adventures Of Aqua Kitty And Friends (Cargo, 1994).
Rob Crow recorded the "lo-fi" Lactose Adept (Cargo, 1996) along the same style and then Spotlight On Optiganally Yours (Cargo, 1997), a bizarre experiment with a keyboard called "optigan" in collaboration with Pea Hix.
Rob Crow's talent is undeniable, but he seems determined to scatter it and waste it in the most grotesque manner.

Splendid Magazine reviews Rob Crow: My Room Is a Mess
With My Room Is a Mess, Crow pours the sounds of his numerous projects past and present (Heavy Vegetable, Pinback, and Alpha Males, to name a few) into a blender and serves up a little of everything.
Perhaps he should have let the blender run a little longer, though, as the album is less like a salsa dip and more like a trip to the salad bar, with the diverging tastes partitioned into separate songs instead of being chopped up and mixed together for a totally new flavor.
Crow's more obvious stylistic quirks appear in a few of the filler tracks but don't really channel into the rest of the material.

 Optiganally Yours presents: Exclusively Talentmaker!
Crow has to write around the Optigan's capabilities and limitations: one key can summon up a waltz-time string quartet, a funky drummer or a cackling Les Baxter-style monkey, all with that great scratchy-old-record sound, but it can only handle about eight different chords.
You guess that Rob Crow and Pea Hix, the Optigan maestros here, found their model hidden at the back of some childhood cupboard one stoned aftemoon and decided to, hey, see what it could do.
Rob Crow and co-conspirator Pea Hix, for reasons known only to themselves, have chosen to shun the use of reliable contemporary samplers in order to embrace this humble and archaic gizmo, which is, by their own admission, hopelessly impractical on almost every level.

Most people know Rob Crow as the guy behind the avant-pop (or prog-pop, or emo, or whatever) band Pinback (not to mention his involvement in at least five or six other bands, including Optiganally Yours, Heavy Vegetable, and Thingy).
Apparently, all of Crow’s involvements in other projects still haven’t given him enough outlets for all his creative juices, because My Room is a Mess is Crow’s third solo album, and his first in seven years.
It certainly seems serious, and Crow does the style surprisingly well (down to the chugging guitars and double-tracked vocals), even going into a speedy breakdown in the last minute of the track.

In moments, Crow isn't above poking fun at himself or the pop game; "Jedi Outcast" reveals his inner nerd, a rogue heavy metal fuzz complete with the speed metal solo slathered over with Star Wars references and a quote by Yoda.
All the while, we almost forget that Crow is a master musician, spinning complex beats around his simple lyrics, changing tempo and dynamic level in assorted ways that make sense.

 * Dusted Reviews - Rob Crow *
Everything in between is the same comparatively inoffensive thing — man-and-a-guitar songs, sometimes with more instruments, sometimes lasting longer than a minute and a half, sometimes not — which begins to take on an irritating blandness before ten minutes have elapsed.
Not once is that the case on Room ; it's not that the songs are deprived of the opportunity to stretch out and expand, it's that they were never endowed with much effort or singularity in the first place.
Once again, the semantics of the album title tell more than they should: this is a textbook example of bedroom pop, and Crow's bedroom is certainly a mess.

Rob Crow is one of California’s wackiest and most talented exports, and that’s no small accomplishment in a state that has given rock the likes of Zappa, Beefheart, and Caroliner, amongst others.
Like most other prolific songwriters, Crow has piles of songs that are too good to throw away yet can’t be easily inserted in the repertoires of already existing outlets.
Throughout the album, Crow proves himself as a superb vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter, layering harmonies and guitars on top of each other with a skill that most bedroom musicians don’t even approach.
