Rob Roy (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rob Roy is a movie that was released on April 7, 1995.
The film was generally inspired by elements of the life of a 17th-18th century Scot named Robert Roy MacGregor and his battles with feudal landowners in the Scottish Highlands.

Rob Roy (1817) is a novel by Walter Scott about Frank Osbaldistone, the son of an English merchant who goes to the Scottish Highlands to collect a debt stolen from him.
Rob Roy MacGregor, who the book is named after, appears in the book several times but is not the lead character (in fact the narrative does not move to Scotland until half way through the book).

"Rob Roy" is a beautifully filmed, classic tale marred by a vicious rape scene which, although necessary to the plot as written, still made me quite uncomfortable.
Shot on location in Scotland, the film tells the story of an 18th-century highlander named Rob Roy MacGregor (Liam Neeson) who has a run-in with the lord of his land (John Hurt) which changes the lives of his peasant community forever.
And yet, with all this going for it, "Rob Roy" isn't as gratifying as it could have been, due to its periodic reliance on sexuality, both in positive and negative depictions.

Supported by a highly talented cast and breathtakingly beautiful cinematography, Rob Roy combines the Scottish flavor of Highlander, the heroic grandeur of Last of the Mohicans, and the loner parable of The Outlaw Josey Wales into splendid historical fiction.
Like Mohicans, Rob Roy colorfully evokes the mythic frontiersman, whose honor, virtue, and way of life become increasingly threatened by the encroachment of "progress," as personified by the perpetually land-hungry English aristocracy.
Rob Roy successfully provides a visually stunning backdrop for yet another conflict between Good and Evil, culminating in the inevitable Neeson-Roth sword fight (which should satisfy anyone expecting Highlander antics).

The story focuses on Rob Roy's attempt to help his clan by borrowing £1,000 from the Marquis of Montrose, a despotic Scottish Lord, and the subsequent conflict brought about by the theft of the money and the outlaw's refusal to malign the Duke of Argyll.
This contrast, represented during the whole film, between the poor clansmen and the rich landowners is historically accurate and the differences in the costumes further oppose the two social classes - the clothes worn by aristocrats are accurately based on period paintings.
In fact, Rob Roy continued to be an outlaw for several years - he even participated in the 'Fifteen Rebellion', a Jacobite rising in 1715 - and eventually made his peace with the authorities in 1722.

Our last accounts of Rob Roy correspond with what this fellow has confessed, that, finding himself surrounded on all sides, he had dismissed the greater part of his followers, with the purpose either of lying concealed, or of making his escape through his superior knowledge of the passes.
To these national peculiarities Rob Roy added a sort of hard indifference of accent and manner, expressive of a mind neither to be daunted, nor surprised, nor affected by what passed before him, however dreadful, however sudden, however afflicting.

But the film doesn't convey much sense of why he should matter to modern viewers, who may know less about Rob Roy the folk hero than Rob Roy the drink.
The film tries its hardest to lend a lusty, sometimes scatological edge to such goings-on, which means the audience is treated to a scene featuring Cunningham and his chamber-pot.
Hurt properly regal and wise beneath his tricornered hat, and Brian Cox delicately sinister as one of his henchmen, "Rob Roy" is poised for a battle of wills between pampered nobility and a ruffian folk hero.

Rob Roy: (Carter Burwell) Within the span of a year, audiences were treated to several Highland epics, with Rob Roy followed by Braveheart and then Dragonheart.
In the film, Burwell's effort is a stirring and authentic piece, sufficiently epic in size and theme to accompany the fantastic visuals of the locations.
The redundancy factor also applies to the performances by the specialty instruments; by the end of Rob Roy, the pipes, whistles, and fiddles --all staples of the ethnic genre portrayed-- begin to wear considerably on the nerves, especially when considering the monotonous rhythms that often carry them through their lengthy performances.

Rob Roy Film Review - Time Out Film
The aloof Machiavellian hesitantly agrees; but Rob hasn't bargained for the laird's house-guest, the foppish wastrel Cunningham (Roth), who together with Montrose's scheming factor (Cox) steals the money, killing Rob's friend Alan (Stoltz) in the process.
As scripted by Alan Sharp and directed by Caton-Jones, this stirring historical drama is less swashbuckler than transposed Western, with a feel for landscape, intrigue, romance and questions of honour reminiscent of Mann's Last of the Mohicans.
While the film's chief virtue is the mythic clarity, Sharp's script, which shifts easily between the fruity innuendo of the aristos and the more demotic colloquialisms of the clansmen, never soft-pedals the historical and political context.
