  Recording The Album in LA
However, at producer Rob Schnapf's request the sessions were moved to Los Angeles, and time given for recording and mixing was extended to a more comfortable eight weeks.
In fact Rob Schnapf had insisted they all continue recording in spite of the tragedy, recalling his times spent watching the Gulf War on CNN in the studio.
Schnapf was later indignant that this version had been done without his approval or knowledge, but given his initial disinterest or opposition to it being recorded at all in their preferred manner, it seemed the only way around the stalemate.

Beck Hansen and The Dust Brothers, with: Mario Caldato, Jr, Brian Paulson, Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf
In 1994, when Beck started to record tracks for his follow-up to Mellow Gold, he recorded a number of songs with Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf of Bong Load, but then decided to work with the Dust Brothers instead.
Three songs from these Bong Load sessions have been released: one, "Ramshackle", on Odelay, and two others: "Feather In Your Cap", which was released on its own as a single and on the soundtrack to the film, Suburbia, and "Brother", which was not available to the public until the release of "Jackass" in 1997.

Elliott Smith's Final Album Nears Completion
Elliot Smith had virtually completed the record before his death from a (possibly) self-inflicted stab wound to the chest in October 2003, but it was felt, as it stood, it was not suitable for release.
However the record, entitled ‘Songs From A Basement On A Hill’, is now nearly ready for an Autumn release after Rob Schnapf (co-producer of Smith’s 1998's ‘XO’ and 2000's ‘Figure 8’ albums) and Joanna Bolme (Smith's former girlfriend and bassist with The Jicks) tied up the loose ends on the recordings.
Schnapf and Bolme have reportedly tried to recreate what the singer would’ve done, referencing Smith’s early demos, written notes and even conversations Smith had with people during his time in the studio.

However, as GBV distanced itself from the tried-and-true four-track aesthetic, naysayers complained that the band's "authentic" rock essence was getting lost, or at least considerably diluted, in the mix.
Produced by Rob Schnapf (whose previous credits have included work with Elliot Smith, Beck, the Foo Fighters, and Moby), GBV's follow-up, Isolation Drills, represents something of a compromise.
For Isolation Drills, however, Rob Schnapf didn't impose such restrictions and, as Pollard himself says, "the performances were better this time around".

After continually getting the shaft by Interscope pushing ahead the release date, (it was originally supposed to come out in February 1994) the Toadies played numerous shows in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area to keep the bills paid (Mark even took in a day job, working at a local comic book store).

Elliott Smith - From A Basement On A Hill :: Folk Music - Bluegrass Music - Alt Country - Americana Music - Roots Rock ...
His final effort, From A Basement On The Hill brings together songs that Smith worked on while touring in support of Figure 8 in 2000 on through to the work he did in his own studio, New Monkey, in 2003.
Mixed by Rob Schnapf and Joanna Bolme, it has all the hallmarks of a classic Elliott Smith album: stunning, `60s-tinged melodies, heart rending imagery, a sad swagger, those vocals that go from glinting, hushed campfire tones to epic pop epiphanies (even within the same song, as on "Pretty (Ugly Before)").
Most of the tunes are fully arranged, often with wild piano and crashing cymbals, though a few, like "Shooting Star" offer Smith at his most breathtakingly vulnerable: just guitar and a few delicately layered vocal tracks.

The record, as most of you are probably aware, had been mostly completed before Smith's death from a (possibly) self-inflicted stabwound to the chest last October, but was not yet in a condition suitable for release.
Concerned parties can take solace in the fact that the album is shaping up as a labor of love for producers Rob Schnapf (co-producer of 1998's XO and 2000's Figure 8) and Joanna Bolme (Smith's former girlfriend and bassist for Stephen Malkmus' backing band, The Jicks).
Schnapf and Bolme are doing their best to complete the album in the way they believe Smith would have, taking cues from his written notes, early demos, and even conversations with people who had been in the studio with him while he worked.

Written while Pollard drove cross-country after the end of last year's Do the Collapse tour, Isolation Drills was inspired by the loneliness of that solo road trip and the dissolution of his home life.
But lineup changes are usually temporary in GBV, as evidenced by former guitarist Tobin Sprout's guest stint on piano on Isolation Drills' "Fine to See You." Another change sees Rob Schnapf (Foo Fighters, Beck) behind the studio boards where former-Cars-frontman-turned-producer Ric Ocasek sat for the recording of Do the Collapse.
Schnapf was easier to work with in the studio than Ocasek was, Pollard said.

To produce the CD, Bolme and Schnapf scoured Smith's studio, going through all his tapes and brief, cryptic notes.

The music, produced by Rob Schnapf, sounds better than ever and the songs are generally good.
At its best, Isolation Drills is a great mix of the big sound of guitar rockers like the Who, that GBV leader Robert Pollard clearly loves, with Pollard's very likable, poppy writing.
Without taking the juice out of GBV's music, Schnapf, who's produced Elliott Smith, Beck and Foo Fighters, and good musicians give the band their biggest, best sound ever.
