16 Forever - Rob Tyner tribute
It was almost 10 years ago now that Rob Tyner, lead singer of the legendary revolutionary rabble-rousers and punk precursors the MC5, died of a heart attack behind the wheel of his car in his suburban Michigan driveway, aged 47.
Rob caught the rock'n'roll bug after hearing the Rolling Stones' amped-up take on electric blues and R&B. He was sitting outside a White Castle burger joint, blowing harp, when he encountered Wayne and they got to talking about Wayne's band, the Bounty Hunters.
It's unsurprising that Rob was the first of the Five's founder members to leave the band, when he discovered he didn't enjoy the pressures of touring as much as he did the simple pleasures of home and family.

Motor City Music - Rob Tyner
Rob Tyner was born in Detroit in 1944, and lived in the area all his life.
Rob had been the bass guitarist for the band but he was definitely not a bass player and left the group briefly, only to come back as their lead singer a few months later.
Rob was interested in returning to the hard rock and roll roots and the band played old favorites, the by now famous MC5 songs, and new music which Rob had co-written with Robert Gillespie and Bill Wimble.

 MC5 - Music Downloads - Online
Bio: Alongside their Detroit-area brethren the Stooges, MC5 essentially laid the foundations for the emergence of punk; deafeningly loud and uncompromisingly intense, the group's politics were ultimately as crucial as their music, their revolutionary sloganeering and anti-establishment outrage crystallizing the counterculture movement at its most volatile and threatening.
The Motor City Five formed in Lincoln Park, MI, in late 1964 by vocalist Rob Tyner, guitarists Fred "Sonic" Smith and Wayne Kramer, bassist Pat Burrows, and drummer Bob Gaspar; at the time, its members were still in high school, appearing at local parties and teen hangouts while clad in matching stage uniforms.
As the years went by, however, MC5's influence expanded; punk, hard rock, and power pop all clearly reflected the band's impact and by the 1990s, they were the subject of a steady stream of reissues and rarities packages.

It was Tyner’s stage antics and persona, his unbridled energy and ability to "run down the situation" for his audience, as much as the twin guitar attack of Wayne Kramer and Fred Smith and the precision groove of Dennis Thompson and Michael Davis, which defined the MC5’s image ---- embodied the spirit of the 5.
Following the breakup of the MC5 in 1972 Rob Tyner expanded on his abilities as a lyricist, honing his skills as a writer and journalist and serving for a time as a contributing editor of CREEM magazine.

Under the guidance of radical writer John Sinclair, the 5 were dangerous, using guitars as their weapons of choice in the fight to change the world.
The MC5 -- Smith, Rob Tyner on vocals, bassist Michael Davis, drummer Dennis Thompson, and Wayne Kramer, the other half of the band's guitar tag team -- created rock and roll that was a confrontational assault on the status quo.
And in 1992, Sonic participated in a reunion of remaining MC5 members at a memorial for Rob Tyner's family (Rather eerily, Tyner died of a heart attack in November 1991; three years to the month before the same fate claimed Smith).

Recorded at a single Halloween show and "produced" after a fashion by Elektra records masterminds Jac Holzman and Bruce Botnick, this is a muddy, messy, ear-busting live album that captures the band's feral intensity and angry left wing politics, but doesn't communicate the rock 'n' roll mastery they got across on their next two discs.
Their blazing take on the roots rock standard "Ramblin' Rose (a 1962 hit for Nat "King" Cole) is set apart by Tyner's wild-eyed falsetto, and the stomping, early Hendrix-like "Rocket Reducer No. 62 (Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa)" has one of the greatest guitar licks of the late 60s.
