Anyhow, at a Sly & Robbie show, everything starts ’round midnight, the basic six-piece (S&R + sax + trombone/singer + guitar + keyboards) never stops, various dreadlocked boy-candy singers take turns up front; in between the pretty singers it’s all about being at the heart of the rhythm.
Sly & Robbie started late, we ran out of steam (married, children, babysitting in effect) sometime too far into the wee hours the next day while they were still hard at work.

Together, the duo have lent their rhythmic punch and near-telepathic interplay to some of reggae's most important sessions, as well as recording their own albums throughout the '80s and '90s, and accepted invitations from rock artists to put in guest appearances at recording sessions.
The first official Sly & Robbie release came in 1981 with Sly and Robbie Present Taxi, which was followed the next year by Dunbar's final solo album to date, Sly-Go-Ville.
Dunbar continued to work with Shakespeare into the '90s, the two shifting their focus once again to dancehallin an effort to bring reggae back to its former state of overseas popularity; they have also worked with American rap artists on such albums as 1990's Silent Assassin.

Bassman Robbie Shakespeare, meanwhile, had been mentored by Aston “Family Man” Barrett (who, with drummer brother Carlton, were the rhythm section for the Upsetters in the late ’60s before joining The Wailers), and played in Bunny Lee’s studio band, the Aggrovators, where he and Sly first recorded together.

It's not that they wouldn't have the right to be suspicious -- experiments in jazz-reggae fusion do not have a distinguished history.
The grooves are never less than bone deep: on "Monty's Groove," Shakespeare's minimalist bassline and Dunbar's funky drumming propel Alexander into inspired (if a bit restrained) flights of improvisation, and "People Make the World Go 'Round" is a slow, dark dancehall workout that gives Alexander's piano lots of open space to work with.
