 Robert Ammann - Definition, explanation
Robert Ammann (October 1, 1946-May, 1994) was an amateur mathematician who made several significant and groundbreaking contributions to the theory of quasicrystals and aperiodic tilings.
After ten years, his position was eliminated as part of a routine cutback, and Ammann ended up working as a mail sorter for the post office.
The discovery of quasicrystals in 1982 elevated the status of aperiodic tilings, and Ammann's work, from mere recreational mathematics to an important application.

In the early 1970's, Roger Penrose and Robert Ammann independently found sets of tiles with considerably fewer tiles.
As a final means of representing the matching rules, Ammann discovered that the rhombs could be decorated with what are now called Ammann bars.
The matching rules are enforced by requiring that the bars on adjacent tiles fit together to form five families of parallel lines.

Robert Ammann (October 1, 1946 - May, 1994) was an amateur mathematician who made several significant and groundbreaking contributions to the theory of quasicrystals and aperiodic tilings.
Ammann attended Brandeis University, but generally did not go to classes, and left after three years.
Ammann wrote a letter to Gardner, describing his own work, which duplicated one of Penrose's sets, plus a foursome of "golden rhombohedra" that formed aperiodic tilings in space.

Robert Berger showed in 1964 that Wang’s conjecture was false, and found a set of 20,000 Wang dominoes that tiled only non-periodically.
He was later able to reduce this number to 104, and Donald Knuth found a set of 92 Wang dominoes that tiled non-periodically.
Raphael Robinson and Robert Ammann found different sets of six tiles that force non-periodic tiling, and although it has not been proven, it is strongly believed that this is the smallest number of square shaped tiles that will force non-periodic tiling.

Ammann was hired to help build the Hell Gate Bridge, which was for a time the world's longest steel arch bridge.
Ammann was initially a fervent believer in the project, but New York City officials disliked its location in busy midtown and soured on its cost.
Ammann saw the chance for a suspension bridge farther uptown, in the gulf between New Jersey's Palisades and Washington Heights.

 Heesch number
The Heesch number of a shape is the maximum value of k for which all tiles in the k-th corona of any tiling are congruent to that shape.
For a long time the record holder for the largest finite value of k was a shape found by the American computer scientist Robert Ammann, which consisted of a regular hexagon with small projections on two sides and matching indentations on three sides.
This was thought to have a Heesch number of three; however, in 2000, Alex Day argued that the Ammann hexagon actually has a Heesch number of four, though there is a dispute about whether the difference has to do with a definition of tiling.

 Penrose tiling at AllExperts
A Penrose tiling is pattern of tiles, discovered in 1973 by mathematical physicist Roger Penrose and around the same time by amateur mathematician Robert Ammann, which could completely cover an infinite plane, but only in a pattern which is non-repeating (aperiodic).
That it must be possible to tile the plane aperiodically was first proven as a general proposition in 1966 by Robert Berger, who shortly thereafter invented the first aperiodic set of tiles, consisting of 20426 distinct tile shapes.
The number of shapes in a set of aperiodic tiles was quickly reduced by others, reaching its current pinnacle in Penrose tiles, the smallest sets of which require only two different shapes.

In that same year a hexagon with notched edges (Figure 3) having Heesch number 3 that had been discovered by Robert Ammann was presented at a special session on tiling at a regional AMS meeting in Philadelphia (and was featured on the cover of the meeting program) [17], [18].
To see this, one could simply enumerate all of the possibilities and check each case individually, but there is an interesting phenomenon at play here that is worth investigating.
The reason that Ammann's tile cannot tessellate the plane is that it is combinatorially unbalanced-it has more nicks than bumps.
