Anderson's powerful influence over Lyndon Johnson, and the position Anderson was marked to play in directing the financial policies of the Johnson administration, were both known and predictable from the beginning.
Anderson, a resident of landlocked Fort Worth, knew nothing of naval affairs before he got the post, but that hardly matters; all he needed to know was that Texas is the largest oil-producing state and that the Navy is the largest consumer of oil as well as leaser of valuable lands to favored oil firms.
A few weeks later Anderson was appointed to a cabinet committee to "study" the oil import situation; out of this study came the present-day program which benefits the major oil companies, the international oil giants primarily, by about one billion dollars a year.

Anderson chronicles the aftermath of Plath's 1963 suicide from the perspective of real and fictional characters, notably Columbia-educated fiction writer Robert Anderson, who is forever changed by reading the Ariel poems.
It's unclear how similar Anderson the character is to Anderson the author, but there is at least a chronological difference -- the character is a high school student in 1963, the year of Plath's suicide; the author was born in 1964.
Robert freely admits to his obsession with the poetry of Sylvia Plath, and to his extreme dislike for Ted, and his musings feel like an extended coming-of-age story that at times doesn't quite fit in.

Given the nature of his transfer (I believe part of it was pressure due to Anderson's authorship of an article linking Charles Parnell to the Phoenix Park Murders), and the discussions internally about JTR being a Fenian sympathizer, at the very least, it's food for thought.
