Atkins' medical records stated he was clinically obese at the time of his death, weighing approximately 260 lb (118 kg).

Robert Atkins has been termed "the apostle of protein gluttony as a passport to health, wholesomeness and the perfect figure." He came to public notice in 1972 with his claims for a revolutionary diet that guaranteed weight loss.
