The son of an Anglican clergyman, Robert Beaven was born in England, moving to Upper Canada in 1842.
Beaven was only Premier until January 29, 1883.
While serving in the Legislature, he also held the office of mayor of Victoria from 1892 to 1894, the year he also lost his seat in the Legislature.

Beaven was elected to the provincial legislature in 1871, the year of union with Canada and served in the cabinets of De Cosmos and his successor George Anthony Walkem as chief commissioner of land and works.
Beaven was in opposition during the government of Andrew Charles Elliott but rejoined the government when Walkem became premier for a second time in 1878 and became minister of finance and agriculture.
Robert Beaven died in 1920 and was interred in the Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.

Indeed, both Beaven and Walkem were accused of attempting to interfere with the publication of government documents dealing with the Indian land question that the legislature requested in 1875.
After their departure in December 1882, Beaven faced the house and, despite his minority position, proceeded to present his legislative program. The farce ended when William Smithe* moved a confidence vote: the government was defeated 16 to 8 and Beaven resigned on 29 Jan. 1883.
Beaven opposed the grant of huge tracts to this company, owned by coal baron and mla Robert Dunsmuir* and his American partners, calling it a “semi-foreign corporation.” In subsequent years he was often to clash with Dunsmuir in the house.

Beaven, Robert, businessman, politician, premier of BC (b at Leigh, Eng 20 Jan 1836; d at Victoria 18 Sept 1920).
He was attracted west from Toronto by the gold rushes and went into business in Victoria.
Beaven continued to sit in the Assembly until 1894, part of the time as leader of the Opposition.

The sketch attached to the Crown grant highlights in red the parcel conveyed to Henry Elliott, showing that Section Twenty-eight (28), Block Five (5) North, Range Four (IV) West, New Westminster District, is along the North Arm of the Fraser River.
The annotation on the reverse of the Crown grant shows that it was deposited at the Land Registry Office and registered on 14 February 1894 in Absolute Fees Book, volume 19, folio 155 as part of absolute fee 480F.

The Beaven family has also heard Alan on the cockpit voice recorder, so it is clear that Alan standing 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing over 200 pounds, fought with the hijackers.
In a tribute to Alan, the Beaven family decided not to have a funeral, but instead a ``Thanksgiving for the life of Alan Anthony Beaven.'' And what a life it was.
