Robert Williams Buchanan - LoveToKnow 1911
ROBERT WILLIAMS BUCHANAN (1841-1901), British poet, novelist and dramatist, son of Robert Buchanan (1813-1866), Owenite lecturer and journalist, was born at Caverswall, Staffordshire, on the 18th of August 1841.
Buchanan himself afterwards regretted the violence of his attack, and the "old enemy" to whom God and the Man is dedicated was Rossetti.
Buchanan was also the author of many successful plays, among which may be mentioned Lady Clare, produced in 1883; Sophia (1886), an adaptation of Tom Jones; A Man's Shadow (1890); and The Charlatan (1894).

 Robert Williams Buchanan
His father, Robert Buchanan, was originally a tailor of Ayr, but at his son's birth was engaged as an itinerant lecturer in support of Robert Owen's schemes of Co-operation and Socialism.
Robert Buchanan, the poet, was identified with Staffordshire other than by the mere accident of birth, by the fact that his mother, Margaret Williams, was the daughter of a Staffordshire lawyer of Stoke-on-Trent.
In all of Buchanan's poems which deal with matters of highest import - the mysteries of Life, Death and Sin, Doubt, Belief, Eternity - we are led by a careful and natural process from the intangibilities and the discordant elements of a chaos to a universe whose parts are symphoniously attuned to one concordant whole.

§52. Robert Buchanan. VI. Lesser Poets of the Middle and Later Nineteenth Century. Vol. 13. The Victorian Age, ...
A novelist, a dramatist, a miscellaneous writer of all sorts, Buchanan underwent to the full the drawback and the danger (here often pointed out) of such divagation; and his temper, rather than his genius, exposed him to another set-back.
It ought to be said, however, that Buchanan showed no bad blood in regard to open counter-attacks on himself, and his verse, as always, is entitled to be judged without regard to this misadventure, after the dues of history are paid.
His verse, though produced rather in the earlier than in the later part of his career, was voluminous, and it was exceedingly unequal; but it has, what many of his contemporaries lacked, a certain sincerity sufficient to atone for an occasional imitation which he shared with them.

NARSAD: Research Center: Project Summary for Robert J. Buchanan, M.D.
Robert J. Buchanan, M.D. (Young Investigator 2004) of the University of California, San Diego, plans to measure neurotransmitter levels and neuronal activity associated with human memory and behavior in the brains of awake human subjects to understand these functions in vivo.
During operations of awake Parkinson’s disease patients being treated with deep brain stimulators in the subthalamic nuclei of the basal ganglia (BG), Dr. Buchanan aims to use microdialysis and neuronal recordings to quantify neurotransmitter and brain activity during tasks that measure striatal memory, declarative memory, motor movement and motor imagery.
He hypothesizes that tasks that use the circuitry of the basal ganglia—striatal memory, motor movement and motor imagery—will increase neuronal BG firing and cause a significant increase in dopamine, GABA, glutamate and serotonin, neurotransmitters known to be central there.
