Budde and Brimlow begin their provocative study by casting suspicion on the contemporary revival of interest in “spirituality” in the workplace.
Budde and Brimlow conclude by contending that if their proposals seem unrealistic and irresponsible, this is simply because our ecclesial imaginations have been so dulled by centuries of captivity to secular norms and practices.
At best, Budde and Brimlow’s anti-business animus—as well as their contention that obedience and self-surrender to the gospel must trump all worldly concerns for effectiveness—can be said to stand in the tradition of the Radical Reformation, a tradition that has a certain theological coherence.

Robert Budde's essay on Restlessness considers the perhaps-death of Dorcas, reading it (following Kristeva's lead) as a 'not death' that allows Dorcas to disrupt a static narrative that seeks to fix her.
Key to the text, for Budde, is the non-coherence of the narrative; the gaps left by the slippery and multiple meanings in this text allow Dorcas to stage a disappearing act.
Robert Kroetsch's essay on Restlessness also focuses on slipperiness as it plays with the paradoxes inherent in the state of restlessness.

Anglican Theological Review: Church as Counterculture, The
In this anthology, Michael Budde and Robert Brimlow have assembled a thought-provoking montage of the church as a countercultural community.
Budde and Brimlow also offer essays of their own to the anthology, though their contributions are not as tightly argued as some of the rest.
Fortunately, though, the easy rein that Budde and Brimlow exercised in organizing these essays permits most of the other contributors to rise above that tired and often contrived antagonism to suggest real vision for a church simultaneously in but not of the world.

Rising to the Challenge of Modern Capitalism (Or Not)
Michael Budde, a political economist, and Robert Brimlow, a philosophy professor, have written a highly readable, factually informative book; this attractive, slim volume can easily be read in one sitting.
Truth be told, their analysis cannot do justice either to the complexity of the fundamental religious and political questions their book raises or to the necessarily prudential responses that Christianity must give to these questions.
For Budde and Brimlow, John Paul’s encyclical does not offer a prudential defense of capitalism and liberal democracy, inspired, in part, by the palpable failure of communist totalitarianism.

Coeditors of The Church as Counterculture, Budde (political science, DePaul Univ.) and Brimlow (philosophy, St. John Fisher Coll.) here provide an analysis of how Christianity and capitalism are practicing complementary institutional cross-dressing.
They agree that Jesus can be seen as a great marketing machine in just three years, he trained 12 people to go out and change the world; however, they remind readers that, more importantly, Christianity and corporate culture are diametrically opposed and use the Sermon on the Mount as proof.
Budde and Brimlow detail just how pervasive the capitalist influence is on the Church, how the Church seeks now to serve as the "chaplain" to capitalism, and how the Church sometimes acts like a capitalist institution itself.

Lynda Reads: The Dying Poem by Robert Budde
the dying poem is prose poetry, like Robert Budde's earlier novel Misshapen.
It is less about events in the world, than the interplay of those events and the meanings they dress themselves in, as they are absorbed by people trapped in the involuntary art of living.
The poetry of the book, cast as prose, is gentle and lush despite the harsh subject, sparingly told.
