The Richmond Review, Essay, Pen and Sword: The Enigma of Erskine Childers by Brett F. Woods
But while Childers, at least at this early juncture, never openly questioned the rectitude of British imperialist attitudes, it is entirely possible that his conversations with Boer prisoners first led him to ponder the fundamental dichotomy between his own love of freedom and the nature of empire (Knight xi).
Childers aligned himself with the Irish in the south and, due to his convictions, even engaged in a bit of gun running for the Irish Volunteers.
Childers was armed with the ivory handled, miniature.32 calibre Spanish automatic pistol presented to him by Michael Collins, but did not fire, fearing that some of the non-combatants in the house might be injured.

 The riddle of Erskine Childers
Before the war had ended Childers was employed as secretary to the ill-fated Irish Convention in Dublin in 1917 - Lloyd George had hoped that 'Ireland might try her hand at hammering out an instrument of government for her own people'.
All of Childers earlier sympathies for Ireland soon hardened into full blown support for an Irish Republic and the change or development is sensitively handled from surviving letters and papers by Jim Ring.
Finally, in the subtly considered judgement of his present biographer Robert Erskine Childers was a man of the courage of his convictions, whose self-imposed task he saw as the redemption of the British Empire through the medium of Ireland.

The Pali Text Society's Pali-English Dictionary
It is somewhat hard to realize, seeing how important and valuable the work has been, that when ROBERT CAESAR CHILDERS published, in 1872, the first volume of his Pali Dictionary, he only had at his command a few pages of the canonical Pali books.
Since then, owing mainly to the persistent labours of the Pali Text Society, practically the whole of these books, amounting to between ten and twelve thousand pages, have been made available to scholars.
It has therefore been decided to proceed as rapidly as possible with the completion of this first edition, and to reserve the proceeds of the sale for the eventual issue of a second edition which shall come nearer to our ideals of what a Pali Dictionary should be.
