  Clan Colquhoun
The territory of the Colquhouns is in Dumbartonshire, and the priciple familes of the name are Colquhoun of Colquhoun and Luss, the chief of the clan, a baronet of Scotland and Nova Scotia, created in 1704, and of Great Britain in 1786; Colquhoun of Killermont and Gardcadden; Colquhoun of Ardenconnel; and Colquhoun of Glenmillan.
Robert, a younger son of Sir Robert Colquhoun of that ilk, who married the heiress of Luss, was the first of the Colquhouns of Camstrodden, which estate, with the lands of Achirgahen, he obtained by charter, dated 4th July 1395, from his brother Sir Humphry.

 William Colquhoun
Colquhoun, WiIIIam, Cornwall, was born on December 23rd, 1814, at Charlotteburgh, within four miles of Cornwall, Ont. He is a son of Robert Colquhoun and a grandson of Walter Colquhoun, proprietor of Calico Print Works, on the banks of Kelvin river, Gilmour Hill, Glasgow.
Colquhoun was returned for the County of Stormont, for the first legislature of Ontario, as a supporter of the Sandfield Macdonald administration.
Colquhoun took an interest in municipal politics, and in 1879 was elected to the council.

Jane Elizabeth Helen Colquhoun was born 2 February 1841, and in 1866 married Edward Boulton born c1833 in Wiltshire, the son of Thomas and Martha Francome.
John McMurchie Colquhoun was born 1872, and as a private in the 1460 AIF was killed in action on 4 September 1916, and is remembered at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France.

 The Calhoon/Colquhoun Family>
There is relatively little known about the early Colquhouns and nothing is known of their wives until the time of Sir Robert de Colquhoun (1350-1390), who married the heiress of Luss, thus adding that title and the accompanying lands to the Colquhoun estate.
Sir John (or Iain) Colquhoun (1408-1459) held the office of Governor of Dumbarton Castle and married Jean Erskine, the daughter of Lord Robert Erskine, however I have not yet discovered anything of her ancestry.

In Sir Alexander’s time occurred the raid of Glenfinlas, and the bloody clan conflict of Glenfruin, between theColquhouns and Macgregors, in December 1602 and February 1603, regarding which the popular accounts are much at variance with the historical facts.
One hundred and forty of the Colquhouns were salughtered, and many more were wounded, among whom were several women and children.
Says Mr Fraser, to whose book on the Colquhouns we have been much indebted in this account, "significant testimony was given that the ancient feud between his family and thatof the Macgregors, which had frequently led to such disastrous results to both, had given place to feelings of hearty goodwill and friendship.

Colquhoun was educated at Kilmarnock Academy and won a scholarship to the Glasgow School of Art 1933-8, where he studied under Hugh Crawford and Ian Fleming and met his inseparable companion Robert Macbryde.
In 1941 he settled in London with Macbryde, sharing a studio for a while with John Minton, Jankel Adler, an artist who was to affect Colquhoun’s style, took a neighbouring studio.
Colquhoun and MacBryde first exhibited together in 1942 at the Lefevre Gallery, and his first one-man show in 1943 was also at the Lefevre, where he continued to exhibit regularly from 1943 to 1950.

The previous posessor of the Estate was Sir Ivar Colquhoun, third generation and was given the title by the King of England.
On November the 8, 1739, a grant was issued to Lord William Borden, in Virginia, by King James I, of England, to some 90,000 acres of land lying in the Shenandoah Valley, stipulating he would settle at least 100 families from the Old Country to assist him in developing this tract of land.

Colquhoun served as an ambulance driver in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War II, but having been injured he returned to Britain (1941) where he took a studio with McBride at Bedford Gardens in London.
Colquhoun's early work was greatly influenced by the colours and light of the Ayrshire countryside and includes pictures of agricultural labourers and workmen portrayed with a genuine sense of feeling.
The 'Two Roberts' were evicted from their studio in 1947 and Colquhoun died in London in relative obscurity.

His grandson Iain Colquhoun of Luss married Margaret, the daughter of the Earl of Lennox.
Luss was raided by thieving MacGregors in 1603, leading to a bloody battle and defeat of five hundred Colquhoun men, three hundred of whom were on horseback, by four hundred MacGregor men at Glen Fruin.
Over two hundred of the Colquhoun men were lost when the MacGregors, who had split into two parties, attacked from front and rear and forced the horsemen onto the soft ground of the Moss of Auchingaich.
