Crippen completed his undergraduate degree with a double major in geology and geography at the University of California Los Angeles and a master's degree in geology and a Ph.D. in Earth science remote sensing at the University of California Santa Barbara.
Crippen has "a knack for matching wits with satellite data and coming up with unforeseen data," wrote documentarian Nicholas Clapp in his book about the search for the lost city of Ubar.

Crippen earned a B.S. in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1960 and went on to become a Navy captain.

On October 25, 1957, the Superior Court for Cowlitz County adjudged the plaintiff (appellant), Betty Crippen, to be a delinquent child.
Betty, a minor girl 15 years of age, had been abandoned by her mother at 3 months of age and, at the time of the delinquency hearing, was living with her father and stepmother.
His examination disclosed that Betty had large perforations in both ear drums and an interruption of the ossicular chain on the right side, resulting in a severe hearing loss in the right ear and a moderate loss of hearing in the left ear.
