Robert Dudley was a son of Earl of Leicester and Lady Douglas Sheffield, a daughter of William Howard, 1st Baron Howard of Effingham.
The Earl of Leicester is thought to have married her in 1573 but he denied it in public at the time, possibly because he feared the wrath and loss of favour of Queen Elizabeth I.
Dudley married her in Lyons in 1606, after they had received a Papal dispensation because they were blood relatives and first settled in Florence.

Robert Dudley (7 August, 1574 Sheen Palace, Surrey – 6 September, 1649 Florence) was the son of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester and the author of Dell'Arcano del Mare.
Sixteen years later, Robert brought the matter to the attention of the Star Chamber, seeking to establish his claim to the title of Earl of Leicester and the right to inherit his uncle Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick 's estate of Warwick Castle, Ambrose having no recorded issue.
Dudley fell from favour at the English court for his philandering and ill-considered support in the Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex rebellion.

On the Descendants of Robert Dudley
Sir Robert left his wife and 4 daughters in England (well cared for) and took his mistress Elizabeth Southwell (disguised as a boy) and went to Italy.
Because of the lingering antagonistic attitudes between the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church, it was easy for Sir Robert to obtain a dispensation from the Pope for a divorce, and he married his mistress there and had 13 children.
He died in Florence in September 1649, a well respected man. Upon his death, his son Charles took the title "Duke of Northumberland." Sir Robert's wife Elizabeth was styled "Duchess Dudley," and there is a monument to her in the church of St. Pancratius in Florence.
