Robert Fitzhamon (died March 1107) was Lord of Gloucester and the conqueror of Glamorgan.
Robert probably did not fight at Hastings, and does not appear in the Domesday Book, although some relatives may. He first comes to prominence as a supporter of William Rufus during the Rebellion of 1088.
Fitzhamon married Sibyl, daughter of Roger of Montgomery, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, and Mabel of BĂȘlleme, by whom he probably only had one child, Mabel, who inherited his great estates and married Robert of Gloucester.

Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester (~1090 - October 31, 1147) was an illegitimate son of Henry I of England, and one of the dominant figures of the English Anarchy period.
At his father's death, in the struggle between the Empress Maud and Stephen for the English throne, he at first declared for Stephen, but subsequently left Stephen's service and was loyal to Maud, his half-sister, until his death.
Robert fought tirelessly on Maud's behalf until his death in 1147 from a fever at Bristol.

The Norman Invasion of South Wales and Rumney Castle
Under Fitzhamon this unit became a completely separate lordship which until 1317 was also held by the lord of Glamorgan, as the former kingdom of Morgannwg came to be known after its conquest by the Normans.
As there is evidence to suggest Rumney was granted to Robert de Haia during Fitzhamon's tenure of the lordship, it is also possible that the former could have founded the castle and it could have been built as late as c.1093.
Earl William, who inherited seisin from his father Robert, was engaged in several territorial clashes with the Welsh during his lordship of Glamorgan and Gwynllwg, and his death late in 1183 occasioned the outbreak of a major revolt throughout south Wales.

An undoubted Earl of Gloucester, perhaps the first authentic one, at any rate after the Conquest, is Robert FitzHamon's son-in-law, another Robert, who was an illegitimate son of Henry I and was so created 1122.
The Earldom passed to his eldest son, William FitzRobert, and from him to John, later King John and husband from 1189 to 1199 (when he divorced her) of Isabel, the youngest of William FitzRobert's three daughters.
