  Robert Fortune - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robert Fortune (September 16, 1812 - April 13, 1880), was a Scottish botanist and traveller.
In subsequent journeys he visited Formosa and Japan, and described the culture of the silkworm and the manufacture of rice.
The standard botanical author abbreviation Fortune is applied to plants described by this botanist, who should also appear on this list.

Robert Fortune was born on the 16th September 1812 at Kello in Berwickshire and was destined to help build the wealth of the vast British Empire and to become one of the greatest plant hunters.
Thirty-year-old Robert Fortune was to spend his time in China gathering information on chinese gardening and collecting new plants and seed, he was also required to pay particular attention to twenty specific queries listed by the society these included keeping a lookout for lilies, oranges, peaches, blue peonies and various types of tea.
Fortune confirmed that the women lived up to their reputation as the prettiest in the country, although he found their shrunken feet and white-painted faces were not to his taste.

Fortune was equipped for his trip by the Horticultural Society with a spade and trowels, a life-preserver (apparently a cosh of some sort), pistols, a fowling piece (a double-barrelled shotgun) and a Chinese dictionary.
Fortune lay hidden on deck until the first pirate junk was only twenty yards away, then leapt up, firing both barrels (aiming at the helmsman).
Fortune made two more trips to China (1853-56, 1858-59) and one trip to Japan (1860-62), and was responsible for the introduction of over 120 species of plants to western gardens.On one of these later trips the East India Company asked him to collect China Tea for growing in India.

If you every wanted to rent a film with tones of great actors and an origanal story Robert Altman's Cookie's Fortune is your best bet.
I wouldn't say it was as great as some of the stuff Altman has done but considering some of the stuff that is made to day I'd say it was pretty tight.
Amusing and inspiring this is a polished work from one of the great American directors.
