The legacy of Robert Gordis: a memorial tribute on the
Robert Gordis was an outstanding rabbi-scholar whose achievements include the establishment of the first Conservative all-day school in the US, the co-founding of the quarterly journal 'Judaism' and the authorship of more than 20 books and scholarly articles dealing mostly on Biblical scholarship.
Gordis' scholarship, as I have said, also falls into a second category: his books that manifest his character as rabbi and teacher, the rabbi whose duty it is to teach his congregation, his edah, the widely-dispersed community of Israel.
Gordis quoted with eager approval the statement in the Talmud that "every human being is destined to render an account before God for all the blessings of the world that his eyes beheld and that he did not enjoy".

However, Robert Gordis suggests that it was indeed an integral part of the practices of the Jews.
He states that the Talmud provides a record of that end of the practice, ten years prior to the destruction of the Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 B.C.E., which suggests that it was the practice of one of the kingdoms for at least a small amount of time.

Graves, The Origins of Ketiv-Qere Readings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
According to Gordis, the first and earliest Ketiv-Qere variants involved the Tetragrammaton and the substitution of euphemisms for indelicate expressions, since both are mentioned in the Talmud (Gordis 1971: 29-31).
Gordis described the first two stages as "genuine Kethib-Qere" (Gordis 1971: 37), because in both cases the Qere simply admonishes the reader to vocalize something different than what is written in the text.
Gordis suggested that since the number of manuscripts consulted was not large, there were never more than two variants found for the same reading (Gordis 1971: 49).

 Paul and Sexual Sin
He felt that Paul's disproportionate criticism of sexual sin betrayed a misunderstanding of Judaic teaching and was directly responsible for tendency of the medieval church to regard virtually all sex as "dirty" and allowable only as a vehicle for procreation.
In fact, Gordis regarded the attitude of the medieval church as the very sociological root from which many of the problems in modern society (divorce, remarriage, abortion, etc.) could be traced.
The more liberal Christian churches appear to have accepted Gordis' thesis completely, as one of the most obvious tendencies within that group is to regard the Pauline corpus as having no authority because of its perceived "politically incorrect" views in a number of areas, including its strict condemnation of sexual sin.

 Jewish Proselytizers? -- Monday, Feb. 24, 1958 -- Page 1 -- TIME
Jewish emphasis on family life would be a firm foundation in "the contemporary quagmire of sex and family relations." Jewish internationalism would be a potent palliative for the excesses of nationalism.
For one thing, potential converts would have to acquire not only a new set of beliefs but "a new pattern of practice that requires a complete transformation of one's way of life." In addition, "it should be remembered that no Christian sect has ever formally surrendered the goal of converting the Jews to Christianity.
The center, says Gordis, will "make available to all who knock at its door the guidance of the Jewish tradition in solving whatever problems confront them." Eventually, Gordis believes, Jewry may again take up "the challenge of the prophetic injunction" to be " 'a light to the nations.'"

Rabbi Robert Gordis translates and interprets a mishnah which is contemporaneous with the above-mentioned midrash to emphasize the universal truths of the book of Genesis.
No contemporary rabbi was more devoted to the pursuit of social justice than Robert Gordis, and no one more actively sought interfaith partnerships to pursue those goals.
Gordis omits the phrases in parentheses, preferring a variant reading which is generally not accepted as the original, but is more in keeping with the context of the Biblical reference.

Two individuals who deserve mention here were exact contemporaries of Gordon, namely Robert Gordis and Harry Orlinsky.
Gordis, as David Sperling pointed out in his very informative book Students of the Covenant, gets pride of place as the first American-born American-trained Jewish Bible scholar, having received his Ph.D. under Margolis in 1929, [8] one year before Gordon completed his training under Montgomery in 1930.
Orlinsky was born in Canada, and then trained in the U.S.; by the way, he too was a student of Margolis, though the great master died soon after Orlinsky arrived at Dropsie.

Rabbi Robert Gordis, of Temple University, argues for pluralism and tolerance, maintaining that these modern values from the beginning were warranted by Judaism, which never claimed an exclusive right to salvation but accepted its chosen people status as an obligation to the world.
The Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions (CSDI) was founded by Robert Maynard Hutchins and was based in Santa Barbara, California, from 1959 to 1987.
During that time it brought together many of the most capable and distinguished minds of the times to discuss vital issues facing American society of the day.

This exemption is buttressed by the Talmudic principle that women are free from observing positive time bound commandments.
However, Robert Gordis points out that the Talmud's decision to exempt women from most positive time bound commandments was in fact a generalization from a few specific instances, and not a universally binding rule (p.52, Greenberg).
In our case, the rule in clearly descriptive and not prescriptive, as the many exceptions make clear.

To judge from the way men have used their power over earth, one doubts whether this generation has even proved worthy of possessing the right to exploit the earth."
