If Hallam can ever be said to have deviated from perfect fairness, it was in the tacit assumption that the 19th-century theory of the constitution was the right theory in previous centuries, and that those who departed from it on one side or the other were in the wrong.
Hallam is generally described as a philosophical historian.~ The description is justified not so much by any philosophical quality in his method as by the nature of his subject and his own temper.
Hallam is a philosopher to this extent that both in political and in literary history he fixed his attention on results rather than on persons.

The village of Hallam was totally annihilated in a singular act of vengeance by William the Conqueror's army in 1069, three years after the Battle of Hastings, in revenge for the uprising of the northern earls.
The second source of the Hallam name was that of the manor of Hallam found in southern Derbyshire, and consists of West Hallam, Kirk Hallam, Little Hallam, and Hallam Fields.
The Hallam family name shows up again in Sheffield in the 1600's and originated with the manor of Hallam in Derbyshire, and not with the lost village of Hallam destroyed by William the Conqueror in 1069.

Robert Hallam was a native of London, and intended by his parents for a maritime life, in preparation for which they had him instructed in navigation, and then apprenticed him to the captain of a trading vessel.
Hallam, returning from his business one evening, found his wife intoxicated: being irritated by this circumstance, he expressed his sentiments with great freedom; and she replying with some warmth, he beat her so as to leave evident marks of resentment on her face.
The infidelity of Hallam's wife tempted him to equal indulgence of his irregular passions: he had illicit connexions with several women, and, in particular, seduced the wife of a waterman, which broke the husband's heart, and he died in consequence of the affair.
