In his chosen field of the arts, Robert Helpmann proved himself to be world class not just as a ballet dancer, but also as a stage actor, screen actor, choreographer, director and festival organiser, and those with a deeper appreciation of the creative process recognise this as the hallmark of a truly great artist.

Helpmann's career as a choreographer was launched in the war, when de Valois needed someone to fill the gap left when Ashton was called up.
Helpmann's last ballet for the company was the melodramatic Elektra in 1963 - a disaster by most accounts - but he went on to create successful new works for the Australian Ballet.
Helpmann left the Sadler's Wells Ballet and concentrated on acting (see below), returning occasionally as a guest to join Ashton in their unsurpassable double act as the Ugly Sisters in Cinderella.

Robert Rounseville stars as the poet Hoffmann, who is in love with ballerina Stella (Moira Shearer), who also holds a fascination for Councillor Linsdorf (Robert Helpmann).
Helpmann gets to wear some intriguing makeups, most notably the gaunt death's head of Doctor Miracle; the design bears more than a passing resemblance to the chilling visage of Baron Orlok in Nosferatu.
That the resemblance is not a coincidence is underlined by some of Helpmann's movements, which mimic some of the famous stills of Max Shreck as Orlok.
