  Recognition and Change
Robert Hertz’s work Death and the Right Hand is one of the genesis works that probes into the meta-reality and symbolic reality of death.
Hertz’s writes that in the ‘so-called primitive’ cultures in his focus, that misfortune and impurity are viewed as one and the same (and can be experienced ‘in a formal way’)- (‘outcasts’)(!).
Hertz’s also gives us insight into the actual care that goes into taking care of the dead- expressed in careful wrapping of the bodies, the shire time spent dealing with the ritual needs of the diseased, as well as how death is totally integrated into the composite culture.

The Dark Side of Humanity: The Work of Robert Hertz and Its Legacy - Review Australian Journal of Anthropology, The - ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Robert Hertz (1881-1915) was a student of Emile Durkheim and Marcel Mauss who died in battle in World War I, but whose work has had a continuing influence in the anthropology of religion.
In his analysis of mortuary rituals Hertz goes beyond the Durkheimian notion of ritual as society's representation of itself to its members to an emphasis on rituals as processes for repairing the social fabric.
Hertz's work on sin and expiation, the topic of the sixth chapter, was intended as part of his never-completed doctoral dissertation on impunity.

Anthropological Perspective - The Evolutionist Perspective , The French Sociology School
Hertz discovered exciting parallels among (1) the condition of the dead body, (2) the fate of the departing soul, and (3) the taboos and restricting measures concerning the survivors owning to their ritual pollution.
Hertz argues that the most important function of these death rites is to promote the reorganization of the social order and the restoration of faith in the permanent existence of the society, which had been challenged by the death of the individual.
Hertz emphasized that social and emotional reactions following death are also culturally determined, and called attention to numerous social variables that might considerably influence the intensity of these reactions in different cultures (i.e., the deceased person's gender, age, social status, and relation to power).

Robert Parkin's book gives a reading of each of these texts before going on to show their subsuquent influence on anthropologists in particular.
The introductory biographical chapter drawing on Hertz's surviving papers in the Collège de France, shows his own ambivalence towards his academic career and it also attempts to clarify the circumstances leading up to his apparently gratuitous death in the First World War.
For the social anthropologist, the work of Robert Hertz has assumed more importance than that of any other scholar attached to the school of Emile Durkheim, excluding only Marcel Mauss and Durkheim himself.

Reproduction in Modern Japan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Though most people may associate reproduction with birth, modern theorizing about the reproductive aspects of mortuary rites has been going on for nearly a century.
Since the publication of Robert Hertz's seminal work in 1907, scholars have charted the ways in which mourning periods, double burial, concepts of impurity, and rules of inheritance repair the rupture caused to a society when one of its members dies.
In their restorative function then, mortuary rites are seen as reinforcing, and therefore reflecting, societal, political, and religious norms.
